I just had a knee replacement last Friday, April 8, 2016. I have numerous suggestions for "pre-surgery" people and I want to ask some questions to peop who are 2 months further along than I am. Now what?

i am will be 10 weeks po tomorrow. I am in Ohio. Listen to OFG...he knows his stuff. Anyway, like said here it is not a race..all surgeries are different, and everyone heals at a different pace. I also was taking oxycodone...2 every 4 hours for at least 3 weeks....make sure you eat. Have something in your stomach...I did not have much of an appetite...so I would eat a bit take meds..maybe a piece of fruit before next dose. This early in the program...save your Tramadol. I started taking that again around 8 weeks...at night 2...so I could sleep...yes the oxy messes with your sleep, but use it now. Listen to your body....do your exercises....take your pain meds and by all means...ice and elevate. Make sure you ice and elevate above your heart for 1 hour 2x a day.....this is above and beyond regular icing and elevation. I learned early on...rest is as important as pt. you heal when you rest. Make sure you have something to occupy your mind.
ok....I had textbook recovery....walking with unaided at 6 weeks. Total flat at 30 days....130 bend at 60days. All that said, I am still not healed. I still exercise and walk daily...still swell and ice..elevate, but pain free at 8 weeks, except night...that's when I started the Tramadol and extra strength Tylenol pm. I sleep now. At 9 weeks I am pain free....or let's say it is just uncomfortable feeling at times...usually when I need to sit, ice and elevate...I only swell above the knee now. REST is important....listen to your pain and learn from it...and all will go,well.

u and David r a riot. I get quite a kick out of the 2 of you.
so, I am 4 months post kr on left knee. I have done pretty well.
to start, I did not have anesthesia, had a spina instead, and was sedated during op. There fore I was not nauseated. Also, never took oxcodone as I knew that didn't agree w/me. They started me on something called deloten, I was hallucinating slightly, so they took me off of that and for the first four weeks I was on a schedule of 30 mg. codeine and Tylenol at nite. None of these made me sick, and I am very sensitive to most drugs.
btw, there is anti nausea medication that u can take. Anyway, that's it for me w/the drugs. I stopped at around 4 weeks and use Advil or Aleve when needed. I was able to give up the cane at 4-6 wks. Never used crutches, except one on good side to navigate the steps, otherwise the walker and somewhere within the 4 weeks, the cane.
the rest of the advice has been very well expressed by all the others on this forum.
mist importantly, remember you are an individual and to compare URSELF to others. If u do what ur supposed to do, i.e. Exercise, ice, elevate, hydration and food
And rest!!! U will be successful at ur own pace.
I would say that I am pretty much back to normal now, driving, shopping, cooking, galavanting around. Still not at the point where I forget about my knee, but doing well.
Best of luck, keep in touch.

It is unreal! I just woke up at the 4 hour mark. See every 4 hours on the button I take tramodol. It's just past 2:00 a.m. My nurse just gave me the Pill at 2:00 and I'm waiting til it kicks in. It takes about half an hour til the meds kick in. At this moment my pain level is a 7 (10 being high). I am going to try to go back to sleep now. I also keep a box of cold cereal by my bed. I eat it each time I take a tramodol so it will combat nausea. This seems to help.
I will probably be up again in another 4 hours. My brain seems to tell me that it's time for its meds. So I better go get some shut eye.

Anyways, have a happy and healthy Pasach! (Yes, I am Jewish). I hope you cook up a storm. I just wish someone could make me a few REALLY HARD matzah balls so that I can throw them at David! Unfortunately he would probably like this kind of thing so..
