Newly diagnosed, wondering about the source

Posted , 4 users are following.

I've been diagnosed four days ago.type 2.

Having my first outbreak and it is horrible, 5 sors I can see at least.

I've been with my fiancé for five years, than

Broke up for a little over a year. During this time I've been with 3 guys, always protected. He has been with an unknown number of girls (didn't ask the specific number) claims he was protected but honestly I won't be surprised if not.

We are back together 5 months now. In this time we've been using protection until about two weeks ago. He's results are not back yet, also mine, but my ob is pretty easy to diagnose by its look and also my other symptoms, lower back pain, muscle ache and sored throat.

I'm in agony and feel mentally broken from all of this.

Is it possible I got it before and didn't know?

I just think it's strange if I had it before, and now suddenly after having unprotected sex with him I'm having this horrible ob.

Does anyone have answer for that?

I am just so sad.

If this is a new infection, you can prove it by doing an HSV-1/2 IgG antibody blood test *now*, while you are still having the outbreak.

Do *not* do the IgM test, as it is worthless for HSV, and cannot determine type or recency of infection, no matter what anyone tells you.

If you test negative for both by IgG, then you didn't have it until this outbreak. If positive, then it is an infection from sometime before (but when exactly cannot be proven).

HSV antibodies take a minimum of 2 weeks to *possibly* show up by IgG, so don't delay, if this is something you want to prove. You can re-test at 3-4 months to compare the difference.

You can also do a viral culture or DNA/PCR swab of your lesions. A culture requires new lesions for highest accuracy, while PCR is more accurate yet and can test older lesions as well. Make sure to establish HSV type.

Just because your HSV is in the genital region, that does not mean you necessarily have Type 2. It could be Type 1. Type is very important to confirm, as there are different implications for each.

You say you were diagnosed already with Type 2. Missed that. How did the clinic diagnose you?

it sure seems likely that you got it in your recent unprotected encounter. Its realky hard to be definitive though. I am struggling with pinpointing the source of my infection too.

I am trying to get to the zen attitude of "it doesnt matter". But i am not there yet

Much easier in Dadu's case, though, since this is her very first outbreak. Negative IgG now, with a positive swab, then it's her fiance, no question.

      Yea

I am anxiously waiting my blood test, but i suspect it wont tell me much

Even if its my current partner this is probably my second ob and exposure was probably 5-6 mos ago

Argh... There should be an app for this

I would think your IgG score should not be overly high even if you caught it only 5-6 months ago, but don't take my word for it! IgG numbers vary from person to person and can be influenced by other factors, like prior HSV-1, etc. Wish it were more predictable!

As strange as it sounds. Yes, you could've had it and didn't know. There's no way in telling how long you've had it, or who you got it from. Unless they told you before hand. Hsv2 as I was told. Can stay dormant for years and you have no symptoms, if you get tested it can come back negative.

I don't know you, or know how you feel. But when I first got it, I thought my life was over, I would cry my self to sleep every night, I felt dirty & questioned myself "How did I let this happen"

Its been a little over 2 years for me now &I Don't let it bother me any more. It's there, it's never leaving (unless a cure is created) it's apart of me.

Woman to woman. Your not alone. But you can't let it take over you. You'll be miserable if you do.

So long as you have it, you will still test positive by IgG even if it's dormant.

Thank you all for your responds.

Felis, the doctor said she cannot determine surely before results comes back. But she said it looks like I have type 2 herpes.

I had swab test done and still waiting for results.

After getting the lesion and guessing by its look and symptoms it was herpes, my fiancé had tests done as well. Not really sure about the name of the test but I know he had to pee in a cup..

Anyways, about two hours ago he got he's results and unfortunately he is positive for both type 1 and type 2.

I'm seeing my doctor in two days for further consult and hopefully test results as well.

It wouldn't change my mood much.

I just have a question about what you said, the difference of implications between the two types, do you have a link where I can read more about it? So far I've been looking for info in my language so it's limited. All I've read was related to genital herpes, without mentioning there is any difference etween the two.

For all I ever knew, type 1 was on your face, type 2 on your genitals. So as you can see I'm pretty much clueless..

Thank you all for all the help

I'm so glad I found this forum, makes me feel a lot more normal about my feelings and it helps a lot.

That's funny how your doctor said it "looks" like Type 2, because both types look exactly the same! Just because it's on your genitals doesn't make it Type 2. Can still be Type 1.

*However*, since your husband has both types, and since HSV-2 is more infectious and prefers the genitals, it is most likely Type 2 (same as me, by the way). And with his results now in, I don't suppose you need to find out who gave this to you anymore!

Regarding types, HSV-1 and HSV-2 are closely related and look the same, but behave rather differently in the genital area.

For example, Type 1 hardly ever has recurrences (0-1 outbreaks per year), sheds much less, and is far less infectious as a result. It is far more likely to be acquired via oral sex (due to oral HSV-1, which causes cold sores and sheds in the mouth area) than intercourse.

Type 2 tends to recur more often (average is 5-6 outbreaks per year) as well as shed more, so is more infectious. It also has a very strong preference for the genital area, so is nearly always transmitted via intercourse (even possible with condoms, depending on the location of the lesions/shedding).

For more info on genital herpes (including the two types), there's official material on this website, plus I also put together my own discussion thread of "useful info".

I couldn't find the answers to everything I wanted to know on any one website, so I searched many sites and expert forums and consolidated everything I wanted to know for the benefit of others.

Feel free to check it out:

      https://patient.info/forums/discuss/genital-herpes-useful-info-for-those-looking-for-answers-like-me--482438

And, yes, this forum is great for people who have this. It helped me lots, too, reading everyone's stories, now answering other people's questions, and asking my own as well. It's an unfortunate reason that brought us all together on here, but it's good that we are here. smile

      Thanks felis

I think while my sors seems to be healing, I got a new one coming in a different place. Is it possible? Makes sense? Does it mean I'm having another ob or its normal to get new sors?

I'm waiting for my second Doctor consult and hope she can tell me more, l think she didn't had many herpes cases by her assumption it is type 2 based only on where the lesions are.

I have a 14 hours flight ahead of me in a few days, don't really know how am I going to do that.

Thanks for all the info you're amazing for doing this for others.

Maybe experiment a bit with lidacaine befire the flight?

Lidocaine plus xanex might Get you there

Did your doctor already prescribe you valacyclovir or one of the other HSV antiviral meds? Hopefully, by a few days, you'll notice an improvement, with or without meds. Lidocaine is used by some for topical relief.

Yes she prescribe me Zovirax cream and another anti bacterial cream to prevent an infection

It does look better already but as I said there is a new sore now and I wonder if I infected the area where it turned up.

I had my gp prescribing me some sleeping peels and hopefully that will get me through the flight.

      Thanks for all your answers.

Fyi, oral antivirals are better than topical antivirals, because it tackles the herpes virus systemically, not just where the lesions are.

I thought so. Do you think it would help if I would start taking them tmro? I will see the Doctor tmro for my results so thought about asking tablets.
    • Posted

It's usually best and most effective to start the meds as soon as possible, but you can ask your doctor, or at least ask for a supply in case you have another outbreak, etc.
    • Posted

      Will do

Especially since yesterday I had a new sore coming up and today another one so it looks like it's not really getting better..

Don't worry. It's not uncommon to have a second crop of lesions during your first outbreak, before things start to clear up. So, not necessarily getting worse, just following one of the normal courses of this infection.
