Night relief from back pain!

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am day 4 post operative from thr having been discharged from hospital day 2. Doing ok during the day, following exercise regime and toppling up the drugs (paracetamol and codeine) as prescribed.  I do have stronger morphine type drug but this makes me very sick and light headed so staying away from this one, it also seems to make my blood pressure plumet.  I have read that back pain is normal but my back is going into spasm after only a few minutes of getting into bed, can anyone give me any tips or advise when this may start to improve? My poor husband is struggling with the sleep deprivation!

It is early days, but I believe you could be more comfortable.  The spasm may be relieved by muscle relaxants (which would help your sleep too). It's important not to let it "set" as the early days do determine your recovery time...  The whole pelvic area is readjusting, and having had chiropracty for the last 18 months following my THR, one comes to realise how much adjusting your entire skeleton will undergo.  All muscle, tendon, ligaments connect ultimately to the spine around the area...  You may want to massage the area very gently and even put on anti inflammatory.  Call the hospital and ask their advice.  the physio also at your next appt (haha if you get one - as I did not) can give you gentle bends to help release.  But the tension you are suffering I feel could be relieved.  Are you walking evenly and in symmetry?  If you are lop sided, then the back inevitably will hurt...  good luck if you were out that soon you will likely have full recovery so keep positive

Thank you so much, bank holiday this weekend has meant not discussing with my GP but will call them tomorrow to see if the muscle relaxers or anti-inflam is an option.

Hi Pam , I am 14 weeks post op and although my new hip is brill! My muscles everywhere else are aching and my back muscles go into spasm in bed and in morning . Physio says it's because I am using them again . My only suggestion for poor hubby is for him to sleep in spare room .  I am single and soooo glad I have my double bed to myself!  Feeling a bit down about this myself as can't start moaning about something else now as hip is so good .

    Good luck

Hi Mary, sorry you are suffering with back spasms too, it really is the worst bit for me. Hubby back to work tomorrow so might suggest he gets a good night tonight. Stay strong hopefully we will both get the spasm under control soon.

Don't be too quick to ditch the morphine at night as it is such early days. It made me feel sick but in hospital they gave me an anti sickness drug which my GP was happy to give me on discharge. I did nt like morphine either and gave it up by about day 10 but it did help in those early nights. Xx

Hi Pam , early days for you , I was told the back ache could be from having to sleep on your back all night . Also read to put a very small towel or such like under your back at night although I hav'nt tried it myself yet . Keep up your pain relief . I am 7 weeks post op having had a double hip replacement and I get back ache when I go walking which is annoying as my hips feel really good by now . We need to have patience but not always easy I know , have days I could throw my crutches far enough !! Once you get the go ahead to sleep how you like I think the back ache will go , thats what I'm hoping . Got my check tomorrow with sugeon and hope to get the green light on that , good luck with everything , keep positive , kind regards , Ruth

Yes I have a specific recomendation for you.

Get Yourself some Voltarol Pain cream (Also called Volteren in the US). The 2% is much better than the 1%

It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to work, but it does work it reduces greatly your back pain, for me I called it butt pain. It takes just enough of the "edge" off of the pain to allow you to sleep. I still to this day use it a few times a week on my knees, ankles, legs wherever I am having pain.

Be aware that Codeine is HIGHLY constipating so make sure and take a stool softner and also drink a glass of prune juice every day. I couldn not take morphine for the same results you have, however Codein worked really well for me. After about 2 weeks (not before) you will want to begin backing off how much you take in order to avoid becoming addicted. I went from (2) @ 25mg Codeine+400mg paracetamol, down to

    (1) @25mg Codeine+400mg paracetamol

My Codein was in tablet form so then I cut it in half going down then to 12mg.

(Paracetamol is Tylenol in the US)

I am a true believer in using pain medication as needed. Most of our healing occures when we sleep, we NEED sleep and the Codeine allowed me to get maybe 4-5-6 hours sleep at a time.

During the day I only took 1 pill at 25mg Codeine+400mg Paracetamol

I always noted the time I took my pills and never ever took more early. Paracetamol can ruing your liver so be careful not to take more than recomended.

Hang in there, just know that none of us ever slept well, the pain meds only make you sleep, less bad.

Hi there - thanks for the tip, definitely thinking I will give the rub a try, watching the dosage on meds and will reduce as soon as I can - do not want to become addicted!
