Nocturia Problems for 14 years - please help!

Hi
I will try condense this as much as possible. I've had frequent urination problems at night and day which started at age 19 and I am now 35. Saw 2 different urologists at 23, one did ultrasound and said nothing picked up. Both admitted extremely slow flow rate after flow tests and prescribed Xatral 10mg. Tried for 3 weeks - slept well - took a break and tried again some weeks later - not as effective and could not stand the testicle and penis numbing feeling of the medication so stopped - they told me surgery was an option but could have very unpredictable consequences.
I have had chronic sleep depravation for many years because of this issue and I have tried many supplements and exercises to help it - nothing has worked. I was on roaccutane for 2 years near when it started - not sure if any connection.
Can someone give any advice and does anyone know of any types of scans that can allow me to see if there are any obstructions in my bladder without having them stick a tube up my pee hole? Thanks.

Ask your doctor for a bladder scan to see whether or not you are retaining urine. It might be the cause of your problems. Hank

You may have a sleeping problem in addition to a bladder problem.
They may or may not be related.
I suggest you go for an overnight sleep study. This will establish how badly you
sleep, how often you wake up, for how long and for what reason (eg to pee).
With that report you can investigate the bladder and hopefully arrive at a non
medication solution.

In relation to a study of the bladder, a cystoscopy is usually performed by sticking a tube (that contains a camera) through the pee hole. I am not sure what anaesthetic is given to make the procedure comfortable.
As a suggestion: try to stop drinking ANYTHING 3 hrs before bedtime and see if that makes a difference
to your sleep and/or to the number of times you pee at night.
Do this BEFORE seeing any specialist.

Hi
Thanks for all your suggestions. Unfortunately - even stopping fluids 3 hours before bed does nothing. At best I go once in the night and that still kills me with sleep deprivation. I have digestive issues along with chronic anxiety and ASD as well. These could possibly also play a factor. But the fact that I have slow flow rate will always lead me to think that there is some kind of obstruction somewhere in the "pipeline". I guess I will try more anti anxiety meds and so forth to see if it maybe calms the nerves of something. Otherwise the cystoscopy seems to be the only other option, which of course offers no guarantees.

Sorry for the late follow up.
How are you doing?
Did you go ahead and try taking anti anxiety meds to see if they help?

Can you post a picture of your Uroflowmetry? That will pretty much tell if it is Bladder neck obstruction/urethral stricture.

I was due to have Holep surgery for urine retention. I was getting up 5-6 times a night and would just sit on the loo waiting for a dribble of urine to come out. Tamsulosin and finasteride helped a little but I couldn't be far from a loo if I went out. Thankfully after a biopsy they said I was free of cancer although my prostate was 100gms (normal being 30gms) It never came to an SPC so I feel for you.
This may not work for you but it may help some people, at least it's worth trying . I grow my own vegetables and ASPARAGUS (which is in season now) I have about 3-4 sprigs a day and after about 3 days my desire to go to the loo has diminished considerably. I go just once during the night and can last for up to 3 hours during the day. I stopped using the asparagus for 3 days to see what would happen and the symptoms came back so I started again on it and I'm fine again. My urine smells but it has worked for me Don't know why it works but "any port in a storm" Good luck and let me know if it helps.

Has your urine flow improved?

Maybe you should discuss with your doctor WHEN to take the meds. In many cases WHEN is as or more important than just taking the meds.
