Oh No???

Hello everyone, as some of you know my appt with the surgeon, which should have been June had been put back to October a year after my TKR!

However I have also found out my son, who lives mins drive from from the same hospital, has had his appt to see Gastroenterology, to get the biopsy results from his colonoscopy, put back from May until August!

Worse still a friend who has TERMINAL Cancer has had his appt for this week, cancelled, up to now he hadn't received another appt!

Things are grim when even the dying cannot get to see their specialist!!

I don't hold out much hope of getting my other knee done next year now!! Maybe it's a blip & things will, not improve, but at least remain as they were?

Sorry to be a downer, but it does seem that something is happening to our Hospital! It is a hospital that serves a huge part of Hertfordshire, so there are many more in the same boat I don't doubt!

I hope you are all in better positions.

Marilyn

Oh Marilyn!!!!!!!!  This isn't good enough!  Can your son's GP do anything to get hold of the results.  It's just plain wrong that he should have to wait for something like that.  And as for the friend with cancer - this breaks my heart.  I can only suggest that everyone writes to their mp and asks for funds to be diverted urgently to the nhs.  They are letting us down now.  I've already done this - a few weeks ago.  I didn't even get a reply so will now email AGAIN.

Sorry to hear that Marilyn think it's a common issue around most parts of the UK. I was waiting for an appointment was told a minimum wait of 18 weeks. Pain became sooo bad GP contacted hospital to mark as urgent. Told me to call after 2 weeks to chase and I was told they hadn't marked it as urgent as GP had done the referral by fax and they now only take urgent referrals electronically!! Was then told if he marked it electronically I would still wait a minimum of 10 weeks, so am now being referred privately. At least if I pay I can be seen sooner. So for at least the initial consultation will have been done. Hope you are seen soon x

Its a sorry state of affairs and unfortunately can see it getting worse. Its frustrating for those who work in it too.

I'm already saving for my 2nd tkr which is a bit of time away yet I hope!

Cancer patients should not be treated like this it's unacceptable.

Hi I have a bowel exam regularly because I have UC, if he rings his GP they will have the results, I tell everyone that they should ask there consultant to cc them into the results, this way they get the results as quickly as your Dr.

If you are having a problem while waiting for your appointment then ring your consultants secretary and ask for a pull forward and tell them why.

Your friend with cancer also needs to contact his consultants secretary and explain that they need to be seen as they are struggling, sadly cancer doesn't always get priority space if its untreatable, and age also becomes a big factor, it shouldn't be but it does.

Those that shout loudest get heard first.

Moderator deleted my reply because it contained a link to the NHS support federation which is surprising

Someone just put it in words Jenny.  It's worth looking up and I just sent the link on to everyone I know, in the hopes they'll lobby their MP.  I feel we are getting seriously let down with the NHS in this country now, while funds go to enhance the lives of those abroad.   People are DYING here because of it!  It's wrong.

I just wanted to say thank you to you all for your replies.

You've all made really good points & given me food for thought. Yes Chris I will write to my mp, or as I usually refer to him the slimy toad!!

I didn't even know of the NHS support federation but will look up tomorrow morning.

    Once again thanks.

Am off the sleep now ....goodnight all

    Hi All

?The NHS is good at times but the waiting lists for some services are rediciolous.

?My daughter is an Endscopy nurse and even in her dept (which is normally a day proceedure unit closing at 6pm only working mon-fri) their lists are very long with the staff now working till 11 and saturdays and sundays too to try catch up with backlogs.

My experience for my TKR was no different to this as in i first was seen in early 2015 re my left knee, put on waiting list in Sept/oct 2015 and told ould have op early 2016. By Jan 2016 I was in a lot of pain and on a lot of painkillers including oral morphine. I contacted my consultants secreatry and was told would be another few months. In February my husband contacted him again to be told it woud probbly be Jan 2017 before my knee would be done as consultant was very busy. He asked could i be transferred to another consultants list but was told once under one consultant cannot be transferred . Early Feb 2016 my husband made the decision to take a loan out and pay for me to go private....and 3 weeks later i had my TKR...done by my very busy consultant. It was the best decision he has ever made..i was told it was my 50th birthday present and made such a difference to me. The only thing now is I was put back onto NHS list for checkups and am still waiting for 12 month check up...8 weeks late. Rang up again and was told oh he is very busy will be seen in about 6 mths. I can't afford to go private again and now my other knee is deteriorating quickly and will need it done too. dear knows how long i will have to wait for it.

    ?take care everyone x

Phew - leaves me speechless really.  I wrote to my MP and got a pretty standard reply - we're proud that we send money abroad and the NHS will get funds in 2020/2021.  It's not good enough!  I can only suggest people write to their MP - I don't know what else to do!!!!!

Oh Sue it makes me realise how lucky I was when I had my TKR in October last year. I 1st saw the surgeon in April '16 & was told 4-5 months on the list, which turned out to be 6, but hey, what's a month between friends. Lol

It's only this year that my 6 month appt he wanted has turned into almost a year.

I am not going to give up on getting in sooner & neither should you! They will get totally fed up with me at the contact centre, I will ring regularly & so should you. If you roll over they forget about you, unfortunately she/he who shouts loudest gets the goal. Sorry about the mixed metaphors!! Lol

My other knee is exactly like this one was before the op!

      Good luck

Hi Marilyn, I think I will keep trying, maybe his secretary will get sick listening to me, I totally agree it is those who shout loudest get there first...maybe to shut them up haha. My only saving grace I suppose isthat the consultant is aware of my other knee playing me up so I wont have to start at bottom and be sent to physios or I-Cat specialist or other people before eventually being sent to consultant, which is what happened with the other one ...a lot of being sent to different people over a period of 5 years before eventually oh we cant do anymore you need to see an orthopedic consulant.

      Thank you Sue

Yes, we can get shunted around the NHS before they decide to do anything. I was told in 2010, I needed TKR, both knees, but was too young, "come back when you can't stand the pain any more"!!

My surgeon last April agreed, he said pick a knee, which one do you want to have done 1st! So it's not as if he doesn't know what needs to be done! But then it's not up to him how the hospital management gives him clinics. Although he is a staffer (I thought he was some kind of locum consultant) & apparently only works at that hospital, he doesn't seem to have as many clinics as some of the other orthopods! But he is a lovely man, good stats, so what can you do??!! In fact the team are lovely, the anaesthetist was really good too, really put me at ease, along with my dedicated nurse.

We must keep on, keeping on! Let me know how you fare!!

I'm just pleased I got referred for both knees at the same time!  But I could need to wait three months after my pre-op on 15th May, but that's pretty acceptable even though that knee is really holding me back but I'm just glad to be on the list really.  I suspect the only way they can bring forward a date is by cancellations, but there are likely to be some during the summer, you'd think, if people decide they want to go on holiday and put their knee off being done before then.  I was asked if I wanted to go on the list for cancellations - were you?  You can guess my answer - YES!

Well yes, I was also referred for both knees, I asked if there was a cancellation list for appts but no they don't do that! Grrrr

But once on the list I would, like you be, up for any cancellations too, for the op!!

That sounds crazy that they don't have a list for cancellations.  What do they do if someone cancels then?  Go for a coffee?????  Or is the theatre used for urgent operations as well as ortho's so they give preference to other 'conditions'?  But that would still leave the surgeon at a loose end?

Sorry Chris I wasn't clear in what I wrote.

They do have cancellations for operation dates, but not for appts to see the surgeon in out patients. Lol

Good idea though, all go for coffee. When I had my thyroid ops the 2nd one, I didn't get into anaesthetics until 7.30pm, don't know what time I got into theatre, I was out, didn't get onto the ward until gone 10pm,& I, along with the surgical team, had been at the hospital since 7.30am!!! So I should think they'd enjoy & deserve a coffee!

I could visualise the scenario, "what are you doing out here?" "Mr Purple cancelled his op so we're all having a break". Lol

It would be like an episode of Holby City, they seem to swan off whenever they feel like it!

Mind you that was in the main hospital, my knee was done in the Treatment Centre. As I was on the afternoon list I didn't have to be at the hospital until 12.30 for my knee!! Only around 4 hours to wait there!

      Where's Spring, it's freezing

      again!!

Ah right LOL!  Mine don't have cancellations for that either, but it makes you wonder why not?  Phew they were working late when you had your thyroid op then!!!!  Yes, the mind boggles about 'break time' LOL!  If I lived closer, I'd go to Holby - they've always got plenty of beds and theatre space LOL!

I'm rather hoping I'm on the morning list again when I get my second knee done.  So I'm more with it to get on the walker the same day.  Even with the spinal, the afternoon of the day I had my op is all a bit of a blur.  I had to get up at 4 or 4.30 am to be there for 6.30 am but it was worth it.

I don't know why they don't have a cancellation list for out patient appts? We do in the dental surgery. Makes sense, what does that mean, that anyone referred will get the priority? I don't think that's a fair way of doing things.

Yes maybe we should all ask to be referred to Holby, always plenty of beds & you get to have a heart to heart with your doctor, nurse or any of their relatives who happen to be passing. Lol

I've put the central heating on again! Even though they are saying we have a drought in Hertfordshire!

I think that's something I'll ask at Barlborough because you'd think there should be a cancellation list to see the surgeon initially.  I've not thought about it before!

      Raining here in the Midlands:-)

You give & sort them all out Chris! Heaven alone knows someone needs to!

yes it's raining here, just drizzle though. I know there hasn't been a lot of rain since Feb but how we can be in a drought I don't know!

It's only that Barlborough said they welcomed any ideas I had LOL!  I hope they don't regret saying that LOL!  No, it seems odd to be having a drought this time of year, doesn't it!  It's normally July or August!
