Only 2 days to go!

So I am off for my RTHR on Tuesday 28th April. Have to be there by 7am as I'm on the morning list.

Just wondering if I should take all the clothes I need for 5 days, or get family to bring in extra if needed?

Also does anyone know if you are allowed to use your mobile (sound off) on the ward?

Thanks

Paula

    Hi Paula

Not sure where in the world or if in uk you are, but this would have a bearing on the answers.

Even in uk the answers would vary.

Best to look at your hospital website where it will have this info.

Take as little as possible and get your family to bring in changes daily, where I was there is not a great deal of storage space. Leave all your jewellery at home, apart from wedding ring. Was allowed to use, and charge mobile whilst there, did not have to be on silent. I think each hospital has its own policy.

Hello Paula. Me in the South East. I only took a change of night wear and the clothes I went in. As I wear nighties - long plain Tshirt style non see through, I took a few pairs of Knicks as not very elegant getting in and out of bed. Nurse had to help me put them on but they do not mind, part of the caring skills. Was in hospital gown for 24 hours. My ward was too warm for dressing gown but took a summer weight one and the cord useful for lifting that oh so heavy leg - you will understand this Wednesday!!!!! I had a spinal block - great as pain free for several hours. Good luck I am now its 5 weeks

      Hi Paula

I was only in 3 days and came home in same clothes I went in, loose stretchy trousers and top.

I went down for op late friday afternoon and back early evening, only got out to go to loo so didn't get dressed or changed.

Saturday wore my nightie but had to stay in bed as had a blood transfusion, cos I passed out in bathroom in morning, but don't bend over or try to wash your legs. Monday morning got dressed and came home lunch time.

I was in private hospital paid for by NHS, so could have my mobile on in my room.

You will need some slippers with heels and shoes for physio, knee length nightie to enable getting and placing yourself on loo quickly lol !

You'll need loose outer clothes with easy access to loo as you need to go a lot urgently due to blood thinners.

Good luck and look forward to!hearing from you on the other side lol !

Most of what to expect was in the packs I got at the preop appointment and the joint school I attended before the op

    Hi Paula,

I was only in 3 days and just took clean pyjamas and clothes to return home in (the same ones I went in as I only had them on 2 hours!). Most hospitals allow mobiles these days as long as you aren't on a high dependency ward where there is lots of machinery keeping people alive. I had my own room but still kept it on silent but could hear it buzzing when I had a call or text.

I got a load of pre op information from the hospital which helped with all of these questions but I know not all places are the same.

    Good luck.

As PJ s will rub! Make sure you have grabbers! And a plastic sheet to help with getting out of bed! Also when you come ?hom3 get help in! Good luck regards Amanda

My son brought in his ipad to lend me in hospital and it was great watching films in the evenings...  (after the first few days).

I was lucky that I was in a private hospital paid for by NHS. So no problems with storage and could take iPad and mobile. The idiot I am, packed as if going away for weekend!!! Three outfits totally coordinated.

I literally wore the stretchy dress I went in wearing and got another one brought in. The matching leisure pants and tops stayed in my bag. Go for comfort, loose, soft clothes. no one cares what you look like. I was irritated by knickers and anything touching the wound. Just concentrate on looking after yourself and good luck.

Hi Paula - I brought 2 sleep shirts and change of undies for every night - sweat pants, t-shirts and one pair of shoes - happens to be fabric clogs - easy to just slip on - wards are usually warm - I also brought a bathrobe for going to the bathroom - I stayed 4 nights - and snacks for in between meals .... just something to nibble on-   had my mobile phone and could use their wi-fi - if you sharing a ward, putting the sound off is considered, i think -

    good luck, girl ----

    Hi Paula,

Great tips from everyone already. I found pyjamas by far the easiest to wear. I was in theatre gown for first 24 hrs. Op was 11am on ward by 1.30pm up and walking a few steps at tea time. Got myself washed sat out of bed with a bowl in the morning and dressed, try and practice with your grabber before your op. Wore loose comfy leisure pants from M&S and loose tshirt with thin zipped fleece in the day, and like I say pjs for night. Oh and huge knickers of the Bridget Jones type, so as not to rub the wound area

I was only in hospital for 48 hrs so only needed the clothes I wore on admission pjs and knickers - job done. Loads of people were using their phones on the ward and it wasn't a problem, considerate lot us hippies!

I am 9 weeks post op now, no probs so far. My advice would be to arrange a few treats for yourself and get family/friends to help, when you get home, a bit of pampering never hurt anyone.

All the best, let us know how you go on.

I was on the morning list too.  First one in, so over and done with  by lunchtime.  I went in track suit, being loose.  Just take one nightdress, family can always bring more in if needed, and a light dressing gown, knee length. I was only in 3 days, so no need to take a lot.  Not much room in the lockers anyway.  Take a grabber with you if you already have one, as this will come in handy for getting dressed when you go home.  I was allowed to use a mobile phone on the ward.  I think someone has already said to take off any jewellery before you go in and take some pure soap like Simple or equivalent, which does not have perfume in it or anything else.  Make sure your slippers have non slip soles, or take (or wear) some flat slip on shoes so you won't have to bend over to do them up.  Hope all goes well and wish you a speedy recovery.

I packed wayyyyyyyyy too much for hospital and did not use any of it.  Just wear something comfy to the hospital that will be suitable for wearing home for hospital. Loose fitting is best.  I do not know about where you live but we were able to use mobile phone in the hospital I was in here in Canada.  Good luck on Tuesday.
