Op failed

Had an appointment with a lovely lady today at the woman's health physio department. Turns out I got referred to her the same time I got referred to my consultant for surgery and it has taken 6 months to get an appointment . She works along with my consultant to help people with pelvic floor exercise. Well she had a look today and has confirmed I have a stage one anterior prolapse. She was very thorough with her examination and has really helped me with an exercise program to help my pelvic floor muscles to strengthen.
She said If I had been to see her pre op things might have been different and she's positive I haven't done anything to cause it to have failed as the posterior repair is holding well .
She mentioned the option of a pessary. I'm a bit apprehensive about a pessary, I'm only 39 and want to still have a sex life but she said there is one that's available I could take out and refit myself ? Anyone else heard of this?
Bit gutted tbh and cried loads when I got home . Got an appointment with my consultant in 2 weeks so will need to wait and see what he says.

I have heard of the pessary that you can remove yourself and it's aimed at younger women like yourself. It's trial and error though because they can take some getting used to but well worth a try if surgery isn't an option.

You are only 12 weeks post op so I'm not surprised you are feeling emotional. You are still recovering from major surgery so you need to take your time and think this through. The thing to consider is does your prolapse cause you problems, some women live for years with one and it doesn't interfere with intercourse, most men can't feel it. That's because when we lay down it tends to lay to the side. Don't make any decisions when you feel emotional, do your research and listen to the other ladies on the forum x

I really think the removable pessary and physio is the route i want to go down first as i really dont want to go for surgery again so soon.
I dont really post much on the forum when ladies ask questions as i feel like i dont know enough to answer but i am so grateful to everyone for reading and answering me xx

I'm pleased you've made a decision and I think for you a pessary is a good idea. Your physiotherapist sounds really knowledgeable.

Hi Anne-Marie, sorry you are going through such a rough time.
I know you are younger & may not need it but I have been using HRT to "plump things up" since my anterior repair & hysterectomy 3 years ago. This is useful if I decide to go ahead with more surgery in the future. My AR has also partially failed & I need a rectoenterocele repair at some point too. I know how devastating all this can be & my husband would confirm how emotional I can be! I was asked if I wanted to try a gelhorn pessary which I refused as intercourse is impossible with it. I am older than you but the physical side of my marriage is still very important. It's difficult for you to make a decision yet as it's so soon after surgery, at least you are young enough to cope very well with another procedure if necessary.
Specialist female physiotherapists are very knowledgeable & can be a great help.
Wishing you well.

Thanks imnotadoctor, I was very sceptical about going to the physio but she was really good. She did a more thorough exam than anyone has and was great with helping how to do the excercises properly. A lot of people would maybe get embarrassed with how thorough she was but I felt she explained and showed me how to do things Better than anyone ever has.
Not sure about hrt but all these things are fab to know as I will be going in with a list of questions to the consultant and that is another one I will be adding .
One of the big reasons I didn't want the pessary was the physical side of things but with the removable one that wouldn't be a problem , so many things to think about .
Do you know when you will be going for surgery? Good luck for it all when you do xx

No surgery planned at the moment, it will have to happen at some point but I'm still undecided what to do.
I would be really interested to hear what you find out about the pessary. I think it all boils down to the fact we are all different, it's just a case of finding what suits you best.
Glad to hear you got on so well with the physio.
Keep in touch. Xx

Hi Anne -Marie,
I had the pessary that you could fit yourself. It was very easy to use and I could take if out in the evening before bed and refit in the morning.
I prefered this one because the one they fit to stay in for 6 months, they couldn't get my size and it kept coming out. I don't drive and local bus service is terrible an had to travel some distance to reach clinic. I also had problems getting hold of consultants secretary for refitting.
I think if you get the right size you can live with a mild prolapse for a good few years. My prolapse was well advanced, and pessary allowed me to enjoy a pre-booked holiday which I could never have done without it. Unfortunately my prolapse still got worse and I had no choice but to opt for surgery.
Having said that I know their are ladies who have found the pessary very good allowing them to continue with their life as normal.
My op failed 1st time round, was only slightly prolapsed and I continued back to work and low impact exercise for 3 years without any real problems. In finally failed due to possibly long shifts on my feet and shifting heavy cases of beer etc. So avoiding all of these thus time.
Hope you get something suitable sorted soon,
Phyl x💖

The physio thinks with the pessary and intense physio i could wait a good few years before re-surgery. ive at least got 2 weeks to think about things before i see my consultant and can go with a list of questions ready for him x
