If fluoxetine doesn't work for you, there are many other medications that will help. Believe me. It sucks because it's a trail and error kind of process. But I can tell you do not stop taking the medication instantly. Only your doctor can determine that. I say this because I've cold turkey before and my anxiety and depression came back stronger. Once again I'm on the road to recovery. It takes time but I promise you your body, mind, and soul will heal. From a person that thought it was the end of the world and absolutely no hope, here I am having the upper hand. It's just a time process.

I'm sorry.. life has different ways of kicking our ass but we learn and continue forward. There are other medications other than antidepressants that helped alot of people I know.

Benzodiazepines but honestly just Google anti anxeity medication. There's much more. Consult with your doctor before changing anything. I know it sucks but will be better in the long run.

How long have you been trying different ADs, Hilary?  How do you feel now compared before you ever took your first one?  Sometimes it is hard to remember who we were before trying the first one.

I think last September was the begining of anxiety, as I took Tramodol for a knee op no one told me to cut down, left me with an opiate smell, I think that has finaly gone now, prier to that all I needed to do was talk, so in the end had various AD's, and all of them have caused me Hell, went a lot worse, ....

I've battled with this illness for 20 year's and had it under control before. Before I was on Celexa and remember I never had any side effects at first. Later after some high stress and an accident with a Traumatic Brain injury followed by seizures, my new seizure med I learned having Interactions with the Celexa. I've been on the fluoxetine for about 6 months now and it was hell for me with the switch over. I'm stable now at 1/2 the prescribed 40mg, only 20mg. SSRI's I've learned with my experience are tricky and can be very difficult to get on and use to. There are other ones that you and your Dr can be the only ones to decide. I don't necessarily trust Dr's with all I've been through as its a trial thing and hope it works thing. Prayer's for you and this group daily on getting to a happy and stable mind.

      Hi OreElect,

Thanks for your reply, but i have come to the conclusion after today,  my body has shuck uncontrolabley, that tablets aren't the answer for me,as i think now it is affecting my Thyroid, still very nausea going to the toilet more than I eat, hense weight loss 16 ibs, i was already thin, no energy...... I have already started to cut down this week, by every other day 20ml, this is for 2 weeks, then 3 weeks twice a week, today was my day to take Fluoxetine, one of the worse days I have had..... I totaly agree with  you I never trusted Dr's, for many years, I will continue to cut down after today, even though it is hell, i am sure i will get there in the end, can go very calm of a night, which i look forward to, it has been nearly 11 weeks now, tried most of all the AD's from last year, and litterally gone further down..... Didn't want tablets last year, just wanted counciling after loosing my husband, waited 9months, till infact I had gone a hell of a lot worse, thats the NHS for you..... I hope you get a lot better in life, after what you have been through, you seem a lovely person.....thanks again..... Hilary.

Sorry for your loss. Definitely Traumatic life's experience's can and have for me have major side effects to our brains. I get the going the route you are going. I've spent alot of time studying the ways to get off of SSRI's and definitely needs to be taken slow. I plan that being a goal of mine in the next 12 month's also. I wish you well and let us know how your doing. I've said and I mean it with my prayers daily for this group.

I asked my question before reading this post.  Just be careful coming off - if you go too fast you can end up in protracted withdrawal that will leave you thinking that you must be on one of these for life, but it is the imbalance from the DRUG that causes that, usually from too fast tapering.  Only cut if you are feeling relatively stable. Alternating doses is not an ideal way to go as it causes instability day to day.  If you can get the liquid fluoxetine that would be better, taking the same amount every day but sliding down in dose every few weeks.

You can even make your own liquid from the tablets.  Ask if you'd like details.

Thanks for you reply.... of couse I will let you know how I go on...... you look after yourself too, and I will certainly say a prayer for you and the group..... Many thanks.... Hilary   smile

As regards the liquid Fluoxetine, were talking the UK here, if it's expensive, the NHS won't pay..... I have already forked out about 600 pounds for Councillors, Endo's etc.... did ask the Doctor about liquid, and it was, just take one every other day, it's the same, and I have a lovely Doctor, there hands are tied, as it's all about money...... Do not care about your health!!

How do you do that, as mine are capsules, they will be in powder form, no doubt, if there is a way round making it into liquid, please let me know, as this was the way I wanted to do it
