I am 2 wks post op for prolapse pelvic floor anterior /posterior & peranium. I always thought I had piles but turned out it was my bowel hanging down.

I underestimated the surgery as I have a high pain threshold. I am 34. I was kept 6 nights in hospital as I couldn't pass a bowel movement even with laxatives & suppositories. My bowels were putting pressure on my bladder that I have to wear a catherer for three weeks.

The lovely lady beside me was 79 & had prolapse for her rectum. She had previously had tvt surgery. She was in better condition than me. She needed help to have a shower as she was quite weak after surgery. She gave me advice for next time(hopefully not) that I wish I had of known before. She recommended a week of movicol the week before surgery to clean the pipes as she said it.

At the moment my bum feels very bruised & scolded as its dry around my stitches. Was shocked to be told that because I had extensive stitching I couldn't drive for 6wks. I hope you have some help for after surgery as you will feel tired & weak. Any questions let me know.

Thank you for your reply, and Ihope that you are feeling better yourself now.I  have been lucky and never had to have an operation before.I have read that they often do perineal surgery for older people and thats what I hope that I will have. Sorry to sound such a wimp at my age.

You are not sounding like a wimp. I never had surgery before & was scared of the anthesthiec & recovery. I have three kids under 6 and was worried if I could cope. The surgery, injections & all the pain relief really take a lot out of your body. Its a big undertaking & hopefully you will be ok with support from family/friends.

    Hello Audrey,

I'm interested in your post as I too have a prolapsed rectum which is getting worse and now protrudes out of my anus when I go to the toilet.

I am 71 and had a lot of gynaelogical surgery in my forties, all of which was repaired and I had no trouble until 4 yrs ago, when I started to become incontinent. I had the dragging, backache and pressure that I'd had before so I knew I had some sort of prolapse. I had a rectocele and vaginal prolapse which were repaired 2 yrs ago, but nothing was done about the rectal prolapse, and my consultant is now saying that due to age and previous surgery he's not going to do anything about it. I am a very young 71, and very fit. I go to the gym 4 times a week, and do a lot of walking. I still work, so am very distressed about the condition I'm in. I have never suffered from constipation, quite the opposite in fact, and until I read your post was convinced the NHS was practising ageism. Did you have much trouble getting your consultant to agree to surgery?

    Hello Audrey,

    I didnt get your reply.

I just wondered if you had any problems getting the surgery, as my consultant is reluctant to do it, and hasn't explained why, I am 71 and its only going to get worse unless something is done.
