Pain, Dynamic Hip Screw - Physio/Soft Tissue Manipulation pain

Had a dynamic hip screw op 3 weeks ago left hip after an accident when I fell and broke it. Im 48. Pain had generally been getting better, coping with just paracetamol, walking around slowly on crutches. Yesterday physio came out and did some soft tissue massage on my thigh above my knee which hurt so much it made me cry. Also made me bend my leg back more when in a sitting position which resulted in a horrible burning pain.  Pain subsided last night but could not sleep and this morning I was grey with discomfort, had to take stronger painkillers which then made me sleep til lunchtime, much needed. Is this normal after manipulation and a change in physio? I feel I’ve jumped back a step today and am quite down after feeling is moved on from the horrible burning pain earlier on after the op.

Oh wow that brought tears to my eyes even considering doing that to my knee, as far as I'm concerned the muscle damage is caused from the operation and how it's manipulated during. I've read a lot on muscle damage and it states with slowly moving it that little bit more everyday it will get better, 1 inch per month apparently. I had rthr 12 weeks ago, some people that are at the same stage as me have no issues with muscles and are back to general activities, I am not able to move my knee except to straighten it. I have physio next week and if they did that to me I'd cry too. I'm told if the hip is put in to tightly that also causes additional damage and as I had the wrong size put in my muscles supporting my hip, thigh and knee are all equally effected. Hope you get sorted soon keep positive x

Hi Vennessa sorry you are feeling pain to the degree you are needing stronger meds, it takes time to feel normal after a hip repair but your Physio obviously pushed a bit hard, your pain will ease again, did you try ice works great

    Hope it's eased today

Sorry to hear of your knee pain after hip surgery. Not many people on the forum talk  of fracture of hip, but Ifractured mine by falling, too: ambulance job, middle of the night. I had an Intra Medullary Nail, with screws in at the hip and knee. My fall was almost five months ago, and my knee, too, has shown itself to be problematic. I expect you have been given exercises to strengthen the quads: I recommend sticking to the exercises and doing your best to be a patient patient! Here’s hoping the next Physio sesssion is more gentle for you🤞🏻.

You are young for a hip fracture. I am twenty years on from you, but feel young. A good friend had a hip fracture in her mid fifties and she is fine now, although it was slow healing process. Good luck!

I’m 8 weeks on now, much improved but limping without a crutch for support, hobbling really, not independently walking at all. But just started driving again, short distances. Time is what it takes! Thanks for replying 😊
