Pain in Good Leg
Posted , 7 users are following.
Hello - I had a total right hip replacement on 8th April 2017, and I have managed to cut painkillers down to taking Paracetamol four times a day. My problem at the moment besides sleep is an intermittent severe burning sensation in the thigh of my left leg. It started about four days after surgery and my doctor said it could be referred pain. Anyone had a similar experience.
thanks
Curt

Hi Curt
The doctor could well be correct - it's awfully early in your journey to recovery yet. The other possibility could be nerve damage - that sometimes goes along with all the pushing, pulling and power tools that they use on us! Both will usually subside. This might sound a bit odd, but have you tried really stretching your back / spine? Stand with your feet slightly allay and next to a wall or counter to help with balance (you don't want to fall overt on that shiny new hip!). From the waist, not letting the bulls move, lean backwards as far as you can, and hold. Forwards, and hold. To each side and hold. Does that help at all? The nerves in the lower back can get pinched and the pain is usually experienced in the groin or leg - not the back! After being manhandled around the place for the operation, people often have such problems.
The other possibility is that you've cut down the meds a little too fast!

Hello Beth
Many thanks for your reply, I will try that during this evening's physio routine.

Hi Curt,
I have similar and was told by my OS that it is a lateral nerve that was trapped when they put you in position for the hip replacement. It doesn't happen that often apparently. It will go with time but can take weeks or months to completely go. If it is this rubbing the area fairly firmly every day can help. Mine is hardly noticeable at 8 weeks.

warm welcome to this hippies forum -
I agree that you are really early in recovering from a major invasive surgery and perhaps quit taking your pain medication too soon -
Did you have posterior or anterior approach? either way, the bone was cut and is now healing - this might cause the burning sensation -
could you share a little bit more about yourself?
big warm hug

You are probably doing exercises, walking around etc. and might overburdening your good leg ... are you walking with crutches or other walking aids?

Hello all,
Many thanks to everyone for replying to me.
I am a 49 years old male living in England.
I had a posterior full right hip replacement on 8th April, so only 11 days ago.
I really have struggled with the side affects of painkillers and seem to be doing ok on just Paracetamol. I am walking about 100 yards a day around my block and trying to go a little further each day. I didn't take any painkillers for the 8 years I had to wait from diagnosis to surgery.
Managed a reasonable night's sleep last night, my new strategy is to try and collapse into bed.
