Pain in groin in near hip that was replaced

Posted , 12 users are following.

Hello.  I am 8-1/2 months out from my LHR and have done very well recuperating - that is, until now.

ive started having pain in my left groin and am now not walking properly because of it.  I can't think of anything that has happened to cause this.  Is anyone else having the same issue - or have had?

I had a posterior done.  I go back to see my doctor in 3 months, which will be my first anniversary of the operation.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Hi Linda, sorry to hear your having this problem. Are you having any pain in the buttock when you sit down or thigh pain? Also do you find the groin pain comes on if you are getting in and out of a car? I’m doing some research into psoas impingement and groin pain is one of the symptoms. As it’s still early days for you the psoas can be helped by stretches and by physiotherapist. I would suggest you contact your consultant and ask him to check out your symptoms. Sadly mine was left to late to diagnose and I will have to have more surgery. You can find my post on psoas impingement and other people’s replies.

    Kindest regards

    Hi Linda

I'm sorry to hear that you're in pain. I had a posterior op and have had pain in the groin since. I'm at the 7 month stage, and it's got worse. Walking is difficult. I've been told that this is likely to be a problem with the psoas tendon, and that it does happen occasionally. The good news is that there are treatments (steroid injections and ultimately minor surgery, if needed), and I'm told that 95% of people do get over this complication.

Of course, your problem might be different. Friends who have had the same op said that after several months they had a 'wobble' of some kind but then suddenly got better. I hope yours is more this kind of problem.

I think one of the things that I've picked up from talking to other people is that it's a longer journey to recovery than expected and that it's best not to panic (easy to say and not to do: I've been really worried myself recently.)

Hope you start to feel better. Are you able to see your doctor before the next planned appointment?

I would only suggest that something that you can do that would safeguard your back and that is to use both crutches.

      Good luck. Richard

    Hello Linda,

Sorry to hear you are having difficulties after surgery. The  same happened to a friend- started well but relapsed into pain.  One of her contributing factors was a lack of exercise and doing the PT as instructed.  I am wondering, looking ahead to my own surgery, how many patients lose ground by not continuing to strengthen and stretch their muscles after the operation.  What kind of activity/exercise routine are you following?

    Best wishes.

I had the same groin pain after my right hip was replaced.  Hurt lifting my leg getting in and out of the car, bed or just lifting in general.  I received a cortisone shot in my bursa sac two weeks ago and I feel great.

    Hello Linda

It sounds like a similar problem I had. It was the psoas tendon. I was fortunate that hydrotherapy fixed it (with an excellent physio) after my 2nd THR.  You need to see your surgeon to find out if this is the problem or ?

    All the best.

Thank you to all who responded.  I kept up exercising until right before Christmas, and have been busy - but not walking, doing stairs or stretching since.  I’ve started back on a walking/cycling program and hope to turn this around.  Again, thank you!
