Pain in hip getting worse

Posted , 11 users are following.

Hi , I had hip replacement 11 weeks ago and been healing really well and rehabs good, nearly back to normal. I am noticing past few days that I'm starting to have a lot of pain in hip when I stand and take a few steps and it's getting worse. Pain from op had gone and now this niggly pain started and pinchy/ picky pain in wound area.

Don't worry, Rachel, I had exactly the same thing. I thought I was progressing really quickly with my recovery then I got the pain you are describing on standing and taking the first few steps until I got going. After that I could walk quite well. I think it happens because something new has started healing. Don't forget that the bone has got to grow into the femor support rod and lots of soft tissue also has to heal. Keep up the exercises, especially good is doing then in water. Expect your recovery to go in phases and to take about a year. But don't worry you can do progressively more week by week. My op was 13 months ago and I went on an adventure tour, walking, swimming, canoeing and kayaking last week and I'm 64, haven't been able to do thinks like that for years. Best wishes, Betty

Thanks Elizabeth, on my right hip 18 months ago, it was a breeze, nothing like this. Though I think I have been doing stuff too much than on last hip, took things really slow and easy then. Got a bit blase xx

Having 2nd hip replacement holds expectations,

as I read our posts, we are all the same. We are not

able to accept they are two completely different

operations. Before my second the consultant said

I was probably 'walking on my back' because my bone

on bone hip could no longer support me. Things are

happening all the time as we adjust to one new hip,

whilst our other hip 'soldiers on! I also had 18 months

between hips, and found the first two weeks harder, and

the circumstances very different. I don't accept that I

might have forgotten what it was like.

However this is an op which should give us

      a better quality of life.

things will get better for us

Hi Elizabeth, I am new to this forum but wanted to joun to hear real stories about hip replacement surgery. I am 54, fit strong, train twice a week and I sail (in oceans) .....my right hip has been degenerating for 5 years and I take Ibuprofen every day to keep the pain under control. I have had two cortisone injections with limited results, and my surgeon tells me I will eventually need a replacement......My biggest fear is not the surgery but the notion that I will not be able to live an active life afterwards. Your post gave me hope L smile

Hi Lesley. welcome to our loving family -

I am so sorry to hear about your pain -

It will not get better, sweetheart - really not - Your active life will slow down eventually .. pain will increase ... as you already exprienced, the cortisone shots don't help ...

grim future huh? so sorry to tell you this ... I was in denial for so long that I might have done more damage to my hip as a result -

I am sure that when you start your own discussion/thread, many of our members will tell you their story - honest and real -

go on, do it - you won't regret it

      big warm hug

Hi lesley, I can understand your concern but as already said it really is not going to get better and your lifestyle is going to be compromised if nothing is done. Yes at first you will wonder if you will ever be normal again but believe me, in time, you will feel so much better, it may be a few weeks or even a few months, mine was 6 months yesterday I am now walking normally pain free, back at the gym, dancing lessons and Pilates well worth all the discomfort of those first weeks.

Steve Carrell the actor has had the op in his forties and is now playing ice hockey. There is one guy who has run 20 marathons on his. My surgeon said to avoid jogging as its bad for the joints generally but tennis should be fine. I gather that in the US the surgeons are a bit more bullish about what you can do. I guess there's a reluctance to say you can be very active in case things go wrong. I am 59 and 7 weeks post-op and already feel I could play tennis. Sounds like you are active, in which case your muscles should heal quickly. Go for it

Ibelieve you can do too much in the beginning.  My healing was inexorably slow as I just didn't force anything through pain. Scared to stand on the operated side as was 2inches longer and took almost two years.... now at least 1/2 inch shorter!  It's only in year two and Pilates that muscles toned and butt re appearing.  They assume were all the same in that one regime suits everyone, but our bodiues are entirely different and what we went through under anaesthetic will be entirely different

Have you been doing too much? if you have maybe you need a day off, listen to your body and rest awhile. xx

    Hi Rachel

I'm 12 weeks post op and have experienced exactly the same sensation. Mine started around 8 weeks when I returned to work and was far more active. I mentioned it to my consultant at my recent follow up and he said its inflammation of the soft tissue and tendon around the joint.

Don't worry too much, rest if you can and use ibuprofen or similar if you feel your body needs it.
