Pain in knee

Hi again,

I'm almost 3 weeks post op I feel as tho I'm doing quite well in the recovery period, I can walk around the house with no aids, I can easily do 20 reps of the exercises the physio gave me, I haven't taken any pain killers for almost a week, I have no swelling and my scar looks to be healing well. I keep getting the most excruciating pain just above my knee tho, I know I'm using muscles that haven't been used for a while, but I'm not sure if it happens when I move a certain way or when I've been sat for a while, I can't seem to figure out a pattern to it. Anyone else having this kind of pain? Or any ideas what it could be?

I have been using a hot water bottle on it today and yesterday but not sure if it's helping or not.

Sorry for the long post, but it's just almost brought tears to my eyes so thought I'd see if anyone else has this.

I had knee pain off & on during the 2nd week. I used ice & any exercises that made it hurt I stopped or reduced the number of reps. I'm just about to week 4 & the pain is gone now. I hope your knee pain passes soon. 😊

I feel your pain!  Literally.  I had excruciating pain in my knee after my surgery and still have a bit sometimes now (9 weeks post-op).  It was explained to me that in manipulating the leg during the surgery (Heck, they cut off the top of my leg.  I guess there was some manipulation involved!) that it effected my knee, as well.  I've had much more pain in my knee than in my hip post-op.  What has worked best for me is icing my knee right after exercising or any time if feels painful.  Anti-inflammatories also help.  I was also told that I would have pain in various parts of my legs (both of them) and back as my body realigned itself.  3 weeks is early days so be kind to yourself and don't overdo.  Be kind to your knee, as well.  Give it time to readjust itself.  And you're right, I, too, am using muscles that haven't been used in awhile.  Thanks for drawing attention to knee pain after hip surgery.

Thank you so much for your replies. I love this forum, it's so reassuring to find that others are experiencing the same symptoms - saves running off to the doc every 5 minutes!

I'll try the ice pack tomoro, I was just showing my partner how and when it seems to hurt most and it is the seated exercises that cause the most pain - the one where you straighten your leg out in front of you. That's the little blighter that hurts so much 😂 I'll freeze it out with ice packs tomoro

I'll second discontinuing that particular exercise for now, doing fewer of them or perhaps not straightening your leg out quite as much.  Ease your poor knee into this.  It's had a rough time!  It will get lots better in the next few weeks, I'll wager, just as mine has.

It is not recommended to do exercizes that hurt.

      If it hurts stop.

      Don't do that.

You gotta doe something lesser than that then work your way up to it.

Three weeks is still early on but give you a hat tip for your enthusiasm!

I should have mentioned what my doctor said at week 4.  "If it hurts, don't do it."  There is some discomfort with some exercises but it shouldn't be acute.

Good way to put it, some discomfort but not hurt.

My physical therapist in France told me the same thing.

I had to do thsi exercize wher I stood holding on to my walker (zimmer/frame) and lift my knee up. When I lifted it up to a certain point and it hurt he told me not to lift it quite that high then, not to do any exercize that hurts, that causes you to Call Out in pain.

    Thank you!

I do have lots of enthusiasm hahah if only my poor legs could keep up.

I have left that exercise out of my regime for the last day or so and it does feel much better.

It makes sense - if it hurts, stop......j just so want to get back on with my real life.

Patience is not one of my virtues I'm afraid!
