    Yes!

There is stiffness in the sense of limitation of movement in the morning and after sitting for a while. There is pain for some people when trying to start to move and there is pain for some people in that their muscles hurt to touch - in some ways a bit like when you have flu. But everyone expresses it differently and sometimes it is difficult to say which it is. This has been the subject of a lot of discussion in one of the research groups. There is also claudication pain in larger muscle groups due to poor oxygen supply when certain larger arteries are involved - that is a sort of cramping pain.

There are doctors who will say that PMR isn't painful - I can only say they obviously have never experienced it! I sometimes think a qualification for being a PMR consultant should be they should have to suffer it first.

Someone said to me this afternoon that she cried when her PMR happened, almost overnight. Her husband had to come and move her so she could get out of bed at all. Within 24 hours of her first dose of prednisolone she could walk down the stairs. For me it was 6 hours! We weren't fully pain-free - but we could move without crying out.

Have you been to a doctor yet?

The same as young doctors and nurses should be trained (using weights in relative places) to understand age, PMR, RA, etc. etc.

There are suits - a "fat" suit and an "old" suit that people can wear to experience the tightness and stiffness that comes with age and illness. It doesn't include the pain factor though I doubt! I have heard people scoffing - I think it is a brilliant idea.

"fat suit" and "old suit" - that's a lot of us naturally on PMR!!!  Although I am one of the lucky ones as I only put on 4 or 5 kilos, even at the height of Pred (40 to 60 mgs).   Lost that, and more, when I got below 10 mgs.

Quite - and we often don't get much empathy from medical staff! One lady who put on a LOT of weight with pred, not from eating more, just happened, was told by a junior doctor "your knees wouldn't hurt to much if you lost some of that weight". I doubt the young lady will be as forward again - a patient on GCA doses of pred for several months who puts on 6 stone needs a bit of sympathy not brow beating and she went straight to the consultant who had written the history in the notes they young woman hadn't read! He wasn't amused.

Young doctors need a course of being polite and having good manners id rather being seen by older female or male doctors get more sense out of them and being kind

The pain is in my hip thigh a leg wish i knew exactly what it is and having the right treatment would be a plus got me right down with the pain sad

If it is on one side and just hip thigh and leg then I would ask about the possibility of hip bursitis or myofascial pain syndrome. Both can be part of PMR, or rather are often found alongside PMR, but can also occur on their own.

Then off to the doctor and don't accept being fobbed off with pain killers if they don't work.

You could try Bowen therapy if you have a local practitioner - it is amazing the benefit that can be to pain of this sort. Where are you?
