pain when laying on operated hip

I am 29 years old and have a total left hip replacement. I am 7 weeks post op surgery, I went back to work last week. My issue is when I lay on my op side it feels bumpy, it starts to hurt, and then my knee starts to hurt bad. When will I be able to lay on the side that was operated again, that is the side I sleep on

just try for a short time and increase gradually...depends on your mattress too...we bought a thick memory foam topper and that made a real difference. even nearly 12 months post op my joint still feels bumpy but can sleep most of the night on ut...just takes time!

Hi Shane--You're still a newby.  Don't worry--you're experiencing the same thing

most of us (all of us if we're honest) have experienced.  Your doctor probably told

you to put a pillow between your legs to relieve the pressure and keep the hip

aligned when on your side.  It is true--it works.  I am 5 months post THR.  When

in bed I still move my body from side to side or back to front as a total unit.  What

I mean is...I don't just throw my leg in the direction I want to turn--I move my

pelvis and legs as one unit.  Hope that makes sense.  This to me just seems logical-

--why put undo strain on your new hip.  Be patient with yourself, do the excercises

that have been prescribed, take your vitamins and eat healthy--you wiil improve.

The first time I tried it I was eight wks.post op.omg it was extremely painful. It felt like bone on bone slipping down then a thump. That scared me I turned back real fast. Didn't try again six months. I can tolerate it now at eight months no pain.still slow turning there.Hopefully you can do it sooner

I believe that may still be a little early.I still have to use a pillow between my legs and the operated hip sticks out making a firm mattress uncomfortable. I sleep in another room now where I have a memory foam mattress. ... and I'm 15 months post op. I would not rush to sleep on that side. .good luck

Thanks everybody, just wasn't sure when I could expect to lay on that side, my doctor said I could try it, I know I'm only 7 weeks post op, but I had a very strong recovery from it, already released from PT, and was back at work at 6 weeks I'm so grateful for this surgery, and my pain is all gone, except for when I lay on that side for longer than 5 minutes, just wasn't sure what to expect for the bumps and pain, still doing stretches eceryday, and now going to the gym.

    Hi shane52805,

I am 15 months out from my THR and mostly I can sleep on my surgery side, but still awaken with pain now and then. I do not think our bodies can go back to completely normal after such brutal major surgery. But it does get better with regards to side sleeping.

Hi just like crissy stated it may be your mattress try to get yourself the memory topper to see if that helps.

I have a tempurpedic matress and helped out alot.

I started sleeping on my op side after 5 weeks gradually the bump feeling went away and now sleep on my side with no problem and no pain.

It takes some time to help and get back in shape.

I am 6 months post op.

    Hi Shane

As you can see we are all different in the time it takes to recover.

My last THR was on my left hip and thats the side I slep on.....after my bak sleeping which was awful {for me} I tried sleeping on the operated side but it was very sore....took a long time before I could sleep on it.....small pillow between your legs as someone said helps

Good luck....but you are no different to the rest of us......its not unusual

    Love

The incision will be tender for quite some time.  I had my surgdry in June 2010.  Just in the last year I have been able to rub it without it being so tender.  It helped that I have had massage therapy done to break loose the incision from the scar tissue.
