Pain when walking

have had numerous steroid injections for multiple back issues, stenosis being one.  When my ortho found out I wasn't exercising he set me up with physical therapy. It basically is doing a lot of stretching.  I have been trying to walk and not making it very far!  I get back spasms and found out recently I have arthritis in my right hip.  I don't know which is worse!  My hip aches so bad that I'm in tears by the time I finish, only going 1/2 block.  My question is if I continue will it get better?  My therapist suggested swimming instead?

anybody?

I have experienced steriod injections thou in the knee, which didn't help. Exercise can help such as swimming or stretching. If you have arthritis in your hip and the pain is really bad you maybe best to think about a hip replacement ,as that is the only way you will be pain free. I have had arthritis for many years and replacements are the only way to improve your health. I also suffer with arthritis in my lower spine. Stretching and pacing myself is what helps. Moving around and not sitting too long also helps, thou i cannot find chairs comfortable anywhere. Are you on any meds. I find Amitriptyline helps me sleep, this relaxes the nerves around the spine. I also take Naproxen for pain, and Gaberpentin for nerve pain.

Ask for a referal for your hip and a reveiw of meds if your taking anything.

I hope you sort things out.

    Elizabeth.

Thanks for your reply.  I only experience the pain when I walk very far if you call 1/2 block far!  My main complaint previously has been the back spasms, thus the steroid injections.  I was prescribed the Naproxin and Tizanidine but have yet to take them.  I see no point if I just have the pain when I walk.  I have trouble trying to shop without a cart.  I guess the cart helps because I lean forward on it when I push it.  I also was diagnosed with RA last year and am on a biologic for that.  I don't know if that is playing a role in everything.

I had jury duty 2 months ago and it was excruciating trying to walk even with a cane!  I just know I'm getting really tired of all these medical problems!  I haven't listed the rest of them!

Anyway thanks for listening!  Hope you are in better shape than I am!

Good morning Buckeyes, I've had a couple of spinal steroid injection plus facet joint injections which only made me pain free for which only seems very temporarily.ive had two spinal decompression operations 2008,left side and then 2014 right sided which I needed an emergency operation due to caudal equine syndrome to which I lost all feelings from the waist down,I'm one of the lucky ones as I was left a week before I had my op as my doctor left me as I had an hospital appointment a week later anyway I didn't know at the time that the op should have been done within 48 hours of total loss of feelings.over the years I've been lucky to get 60% of my feelings back especially happy to get my toilet side back to almost normal.ive been in pain constantly for over 10years now and my only hope now is to have spinal fusion surgery on my lower back as I now have two more bulging discs again which is not good.I used to use a walking stick (cane) but it made me lean to the side, now I use crutches to which I find so much better,as I'm leaning forward now as it seems to help more with the pain but now I'm starting to get a curvature to the spine one more problem. Meds I'm on are naproxen, gabapentin,OxyContin,Oxynorm, which these only help so much.sorry for the long story and I hope you get better more pain free in the future all the best.

Thanks for your reply.  Don't know if I'm destined to never walk again very far!  This has been worsening over the years.  I used to love to walk.  In 2009 I was "training" to go to  Disney World with our grandkids.  I knew we would be walking a lot so I started walking everyday all over the neighborhood.  I had no problems with our trip.  Now our grandson will be marching with his high school in the Rose Parade in January and we were hoping to go.  There are several places on the tour where there would be walking.  I've decided that this is something I'm not going to be able to do!  I am really bummed out!  Who called this the Golden Years?!

      You take care too!
