Partial Knee Replacement or Not ?

Posted , 13 users are following.

I am having a partial knee replacement in the next few months but have read quite a lot of articles mostly negative and I am now wondering if I should go ahead with it or just put up!

Im 57 I like to walk each day I wear sensible shoes and have soles in them from the podiatrist to keep my leg aligned. Will I still be able to walk each day once fully recovered and if so how far will distance be restricted?

i have also read that your sleep is very disturbed after this kind of operation is this correct and if so is this forever or just during recovery.

Also very occasionally I wear a heal about 2.5 inches if I go to a function or have a meal out I only have them On for about 4 hours so would this still be possible after a partial knee replacement?

Finally am I right in thinking that have a partial knee replacement leads to a full replacement within a couple of years?

Any information would be greatly accepted.

Hi I had partial in january and I'm 53....can I say yes I did go through the pain the sleepless nights etc but on Friday my grandaughter and I spent ALL day put shopping and it wasn't until we got home I realised I hadn't once wanted to sit down or go home...In the past an hour was about all I could manage. My knee has been a bit achy this weekend but nothing that required pain killers. My scar is already really faint and only showing about 3 inches redness.I am at the point now that I can honestly say I'm glad I had it done..like you I read lots of negativity and nearly didn't go ahead...but for me it's a thumbs up....good luck Sarah

      Hi Sarcee50

Thank you for the confident reply. I'm still unsure I keep thinking should I hang on as I am still managing very well I still get out walking although painful after awhile. After reading some of the posts some have been a lot worse off than I am before the op so should I hang in a little while longer I keep asking myself ???

Can I ask if you work, and if so what type of work?. I'm 56 and  a secretary and currently signed off work until the 16 July, which means I will have been off 16 weeks. I'm not so sure I'll be ready for work even then......unless a miracle happens! I can get about without stick in the house, but daren't venture out without it as knee muscles seem very weak and on occasions "give way". I havent as yet managed to drive my car either. If you do work, at what stage did you return?  I long to get back to my normal life but am usually exhausted by mid afternoon and need to take a nap!

I work in a school so am only going back on 29th June which means I have been off 5 months...I just felt I wanted to fully recover and not be as tired as I was the first few months

I could in fact walk albeit painfully and could bend my knee up and down etc...but was painful as only us on here know...mine was bone on bone on the inside of my knee but ok on outside plus they said bits of bone were now chipping off...my x ray was one of an 80 year old lol. I went private on the choose and book scheme after a rubbish time at local NHS hospital with a consultant that had already done work on in laws knee...He was so supportive and said if I left it it would not get better just worse so I went for it with much trepidation...I insisted afterwards never again but do you know what...I would do it if the other knee needed doing now no questions asked...yes its hard going yes its painful and knocks you for 6...bad if you can just get through the first 6 weeks without expecting too much it starts to get better
