Pelvic floor exercises and recovery in general

I am now nearly 2 weeks post op, I know I am not the most patient patient but I get over this by trying to make sure I am ticking all the right boxes recovery wise.

I know the main thing is rest and I have honestly been doing this and I am in the process of arranging fetching and carrying for the kids next week as I do not feel ready to drive yet. Should I be doing anything else to aid recovery?

My mum asked me if I should be having baths but I am pretty sure I read somewhere not to.

Obviously no lifting but I keep reading about pelvic floor exercises. No one mentioned these to me at all at discharge (all I got was you will bleed for 2 weeks and no lifting). When should I start? Now or is it too soon?

I am still feeling very sore down there at the moment. It feels like something is rubbing stitches maybe or just the swelling but I don't feel I can walk much or even stand much at the moment. Is this normal?

The big problem with all this resting is it leaves you with a lot of thinking / over analysing time!

Welshgirl67 we are obviously at similar stages recovery wise!

I am normally a really active person so all this sitting down is hard for me, my husband doesn't understand, he keeps saying he would do anything to have prescribed rest. I keep telling him I wish I didn't need to! Still he and my parents are making my life very easy right now.

Hello Claire. The reason for no baths is because of the type of sutures some Urogynaecologists use and it's because getting them too wet will cause them to become soggy and it will take longer to heal. Regarding pelvic floor exercises, if you weren't given any advice I would gently start at around 2-3 weeks but if it's painful wait a day or so and try again. The fact that you can't walk far and stand for very long is normal so don't overdo things, if you feel tired stop what you're doing and rest. Don't push yourself because you'll regret it the next day.

Thanks Matron, might wait til the weekend and try some pelvic floors then and perhaps a walk round the corner to the post box (if it warms up a bit!)

Early days yet, lots more TLC, rest and pottering about. I am nearly 6 weeks post op and just beginning to be more mobile and feel a lot more normal. Only started driving this week and was fine. I have been doing very gentle pelvic floor exercises and gradually building them up. Rest is the best form of recovery, healing time so make the most of it!

Dear Claire, when I've read your words I've recalled that I also was anxious to do pelvic floor exercises but it wasn't until 40days post op that my gyn allow me.

Each case is different but I think it is too soon for pelvic floor exercises. In its place you can walk ( exercising your legs you strengthening indirectly your pelvic floor) but at 15 days post op I would dedicate the most of the time to rest. Hugs!!!!!! 😘

    Dear ClaireM,

Take it easy, don't be fooled that all is OK because as you will see on this forum it is so easy to think all is well, and over do it. Yes, I agree, lots of time to 'mul' but try to go with the flow. See how you feel, then gentle squeeze and lift pelvic floor exercises when you feel ready. LIttle and often, say 3 times a day, rather than 10 mins and regretting it for a day or so afterwards. Eat health, avoid constipation and you'll be up and about in no time, you'll be stronger for this enforced rest!
