Perimenopause. insomnia - getting up and coming down every night

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi ladies

I know everyone suffers from the insomnia symptoms.

At the moment I am surviving with about 2 hours or less a night . When I get into bed I don't drop off and then my body is all restless so I come down.

I've tried so many things but not helping. Has anyone got any tips ?

I've been in Peri for about 4 years now. Had or have about every symptom.

Given up work as I just can't do it now.

Hi Michelle,  I feel your pain, feel that I am in the same boat as you.  The only relief I found is taking a Mega B Complex vitamin, double the recommended dose (as advised by pharmacist) in the morning.  For the first 2 months this worked really well with getting 6-7 hours solid sleep a night, however this no longer works.  Wishing there was a magic pill for all this madness. xx

Have you tried a low dose of progesterone and estradiol as well as 5HTP? Im doing the 5htp low dose and sleep is much better. Im looking to be prescribed a low dose of bioidentical estradiol and progesterone after my surgery . My previous doctor overdosed me on progesterone without realizing I was low on estradiol and it has been hell. Hoping this trio will get me back on track.

I'm suffering with it badly again at the moment. No sleep at all one night then over sleeping the next.

Even when I get to bed after not sleeping at all the night before I have so much difficulty and can't get to sleep until the early hours.

I've tried the usual 5htp, valerian root magnesium (I take this every night now as I it does at least help with constipation).

I've also had an anti histamine and cough medicine to try from the doctor.

I've had it since early peri and I'm now post. I can't work either.

HRT made sleep perfect for the first 8 nights, now it's gone back to the same and like the last week, worse.

Sometimes my eyes hurt and I feel sick where I'm so tired but still can't sleep.

    Hi Michelle,

ive been suffering with chronic insomnia for well over 18 months now.   I went to my docs regarding my neck and associated facial  neuralgia (he actually bothered to read my notes re the insomnia and perimenopause stuff), he prescribed me low dose amytriptilline 10mg and voila neuralgia gone and insomnia, i,feel a little groggy in morn but nothing that a shower and a cup of coffee won't fix.   I do take a whole load of other vit supplements but the amytriptilline seems to work on many counts ATM, anxiety vanished, decent nights kip, no neuralgia, no flushes, I may be speaking to soon and the deliverance of these symptons may appear again once th efficacy of the antidepressant has 'pooped' out at 10mgs.  I can take it as and when, worth a try though especially when you feel things are getting desperate .

    Best wishes

Have you tried / looked into melatonin?  Helps my mum a LOT. And she was almost nocturnal!

It's synthetic version of a chemical produced in your brain when light levels fall.  It helps you fall asleep.  However, you can be deficient or production can slow due to age / stage of life, etc. Therefore, supplementing with it can really help. It is really good for travel  and changing time zones too as it helps your body to adjust. It's also a really powerful antioxidant.
