Hi ladies I'm Natalie and I'm 32, so cut a long story short I had the merina cool fitted January 05, never experienced any problems except the odd ovarian cyst (only follicular cyst) periods were random to be expected I guess, I spot to the doctor after experiencing brown discharge in the first 6 months however this seemed to ease in time, but now I don't feel in tune with my body I get a 4 day discharge around the 5th of each month then around the 24th get a week of it mixed with a tiny bit of blood but mainly brown discharge (I've no idea wether that's even my period as it's mainly discharge) is this normal for the merina coil it's really running me down I don't like not knowing when to expect my period considering having the thing taken out but from history my periods were horrendous hence the doctor putting me on this please help 😰😰😰

    Hi,

The Mirena coil is only effective for 5 years (or 10 if it is being used as HRT) so you definitely need it replacing or removing. You should definitely speak to your GP. Hopefully that would remedy the problems you're having smile

Don't worry and stick with it. For the first 6-12 months after insertion you will have irregular periods more like what you're describing, the random spotting brown discharge. But after no later than a year usually 6-8 months so for you June July or August most likely You will have no periods at all and that will last for 5 years. So stick with it. 😊

Thank you for the reassurance it's almost like I'm having 2 periods a month 👎 However I can't remember the last time I had actual red blood I just assumed 15 months after it was inserted it should have settled down by now x

    Hi Natalie,

Mirena has had law suits from people dying. I would suggest you get it removed ASAP!

Just a thought. It is a device they inserted into your body and they can also remove it.

After reading the other posts I would say to have an exam and get it removed if need be. Some birth control methods are not for everyone! I know you don't want to get pregnant but the brown discharge sounds like a problem. Its really up to you. It is your body Natalie. Good luck.

Honestly the discharge is normal. It's the little amount of uterine lining that is left while the rest is too thin for a true period. I know it's a nuisance but it will stop soon.
