I've heard Preparation H is a good cream to apply to reduce the size and inflammation of hemorrhoids. Anusol is also another good option, I was prescribed Anusol suppositories once when I was experiencing a lot of bleeding every time I had a bowel movement, and it helped loads (internal hemorrhoids were discovered following a colonoscopy just over a year ago). Germolene is good as it contains a local anaesthetic, it won't reduce the size but it can ease some of the pain, which I know can be quite nasty.
I think both of these are available over the counter, but just make sure, as with all over the counter medicines, that you read the health and safety information, I think both Anusol and Preparation H contain steroids which may not be suitable for everyone.
Hope that helps and gives you some relief.
