porridge vs muesli

Posted , 5 users are following.

Dear all, i have recently been diagnoses with high cholesterol. In a fit of enthusiasm i have been busy buying suitable foods and some supplements: krill oil, Lecithin and garlic tablets etc. However my question is about porridge. i understand rolled oats are good for you. But i hate porridge. I like muesli and i read on my packet of a well known brand that it contains 43% rolled oats. is this as good as porridge? Or is the point that with porridge the oats are cooked?

Grateful for an answer to this and any other good food tips,

Steven

Proper porridge is made with oatmeal not rolled oats. If you want more flavour, put aside some of the oatmeal, toast it then add it to the porridge.

Don't buy ready-made muesli. Do as the Swiss do: buy a sweet jar and fill it with your favourite ingredients,

as advised by your dietitian. That way you can be sure that there's no added sugar.

There is a book called "8 week cholesterol cure" that I found very useful. The author gives recipes for a variety of Oat Bran muffins. Very handy when you can't bear to eat another plate of porridge.
