Post Bunion Surgery ....

Hello!

I had a Bunionectomy and Gastrocnemius recession on my left foot and calf. My doctor was originally supposed to shave down the bone and put a pin in and do the recession. But he ended up actually having to do what he told us was the "second option". So he did the recession and had to cut/break my foot below the bunion (aka not by my toes) but on the top of my foot, he shaved off the bunion and I have one permanent pin and then another that is sticking out of the top of my big toe and on an angle through my foot... (I haven't actually seen it, just the where the blood is on the band aid and the explanation of what the x ray looks like)

I had the surgery on 11/20 (Thurs.) and now it is 11/26 (Wed.), almost a week post op. I am in a walking boot and on crutches. I have been taking 1 1/2 tylenol with codeine every four to five hours during the day, but 2 before bed then 1 ½ again six hours after that (in the middle of the night) then back to normal when I wake up.

Now for the actual questions, I will have to get one of the pins taken out and I am extremely nervous about it. My doctor said it would be removed in office and I will just get nubbing stuff (of whatever sort) and he will just pull the pin out... Has anyone had this done before? If so, how bad was it?

I am also having very strange pain... My foot isn't necessarily numb but where (I am assuming) the stitches are and the top of my big toe is very tight and and sometimes I have a tingly feeling. It is the same feeling I get when I am extremely cold. When the pain meds start to wear off it feels as though there is a 600 lb sumo wrestler standing on the top of my foot. Does this sound normal? If anyone has any advice or any possible idea of what I just explained that would be amazing! Thank you in advance. I have before pictures also if that might be of any help....

Thank you and what did they do to numb your foot before they took the pin out? Was it the cream or a shot?

Hi I had a slightly different op 9 days ago and I get strange feelings in my foot as soon as I try to put it down from elevated position. I think it's just the blood rushing into it. A bit like pins and needles. I have a pin which will be staying in but I have stitches to come out next week which I'm not looking forward to

Hi I had both bunions shaved broken and internal screws. I can only comment on mine as everyone's seem different.... It seems all you are feeling is the normal. It's very early days for you. I had min done on 18 October and trust me once you start to feel improvements, each day just gets better. I read someone's post about pin removal and she said it was absolutely fine and nothing to worry about. GOOd luck x

    Hi Courturtles

Mine they just pull out without any medication within a few seconds. You didn t even realise the pin had been removed. It was done by a medical assistant and he was smart at making a trick I suppposed.

Didn't have pins just internal screws so can't comment on those

did have stitches on both sides of foot as had big and little toes done. Had been told having stitches out was horrific but no such thing. Was dreading but only felt little tugs. Foot felt much better after stitches out as they had been pulling on foot. Am into week 3 and blood rushing to foot on moving is much better now - had been going quite red when first stood up but doesn't happen as much now.
