post prostate turp problems

I had GL plus a small TURP 3 weeks ago. Is it normal to be in pain, slightly feverish and with a little blood at the beginning when I urinate? I believed that after 6 weeks I would be able to drive 2000km, I still have 3 weeks to go, but I don't know whether I should consult urgently or not. Please share your experience. Best regards.

It was 3 months before I was rid of blood altogether, at the latter stages I would be clear for 2 or 3 days then a bleed, plus uncomfortable passing water. There is also a risk of infection so if in doubt get it checked out in case you need Antibiotics.  We all are different so recovery seems to vary when hearing others experiences, and I am 6 months down the line and not right yet mainly due to infections. Hope things are right soon.

My Turp was on May 24th of last month. I no longer have pain, unless I'm urinating. Still some blood though. However this morning at 1:30am I went to urgent care. I was still able to void but there was 200cc left in my bladder. The doctor said I have a bladder infection. So I requested a catheter to be on the safe side,,, will see my urologist on Monday. Not sure any of this helps? Denis

Unfortunately UTIs are common with BPH cases.Inquire about self-cath, it is easy to perform, 200ml. retention is elevated, but is probably lower than before the TURP.

This reads like an infection to me. I'd check with either the original urologist or your GP

My first urologist recommended a TURP,but failed to observe I had a enlarged bladder, with only a mildly occlusive prostrate blockage. I sought a 2nd opinion and the surgeon recommended 6 months of medication and self catherization. Eventually I was able to have Rezum, the new minimally invasive procedure. However there are other minimally invasive procedures i.e,Green Light Laser, but most require regional or general anesthesia and some type of urethal incision. Some surgeons become wedded to a particular type of surgery. Your symptoms sound like textbook ones, TURP may work well for many, but I feel the risk of complications is too great. Your symptoms may well disappear over time.

ZD, there are better ways to treat BPH than TURP or laser. These pages are filled tales of woe from guys who have had these proceedures.

I had BPH and was getting up 6 times a night. I saw three urologists ...one wanted to do TURP, the other wanted Holep,,and the third, a woman, wanted to do open surgery on me!!! No Thanks!!

They all claimed to have the Gold Standard . What put me off was the high chance of impotence and incontinrce and the certainty of retrograde ejaculation.

I found out anout PAE on these pages....Prostate Artery Embolisation. PAE is done by an interventional radiologist not a urologist and that is why the urologists won't tell you about it even though it is a better proceedure.

I had mine done a year ago. Overnight in hospital, no cutting or bleeding. I had burning and urgency for three days but after that all good. Strong urine flow from day three, no incontinence or impotence or retro. I got my life back.

I still get up twice a night but that's because I have three mugs if tea before I go to bed.

Im really sorry you guys are having issues.

I am really disgusted with urologists....they are only worried about their wallets.

It has been 17 days since I had the Rezum done at the Cleveland Clinic, and my urinary retention has improved 90%. The question, as with all minimally invasive prostate procedures, is whether or not the blockages will recur.  Rezum and PAE are both relatively new, so only time will tell.

It does make sense that a urologist would be less inclined to recommend a procedure done by a radiologist. However it is more likely not to happen at the CC, where all the physicians receive a fixed annual salary, not dependent on how many procedures are performed.

Unfortunately it seems the best medical care can only be received at the top major academic hospitals, such as CC, John Hopkins, Mayo Clinic and others. They can afford to purchase and experiment with cutting edge technology. Unfortunately many urologists think that TURP is the only effective prostate surgery. I would catherize for life rather than risk a TURP. I am fortunate in that the CC urologists who treated me have extensive experience with the minimally invasive procedures, and the high volume of patients they treat increases the probability of a successful outcome.

Hi, guys! Thank you very much! Tests results came today, no UTI at all . Hematuria stopped, too. I will see my doctor on Monday. I still have pain, but less.
