Dear all,
My husband and I are thinking of having our first child (not now now but in 1-2 years).
However we are a bit unsure on how to proceed due to the fact that my husband was diagnosed with Lyme disease 1 year ago.
Nevertheless, he was diagnosed because he saw an erythema migran on his stomach and we went directly to the doctor. He tested positive for Lyme and was given medication right away. As such we believe that we caught the disease early. The doctors believe that since the disease was caught during the 1st stage that the medicine killed all the bacteria and that therefore he is cured. However we will never know for sure as he will always have the antibodies.
I understand that some say that Lyme is a sexually transmittable disease and other say that it is not. We always protect ourselves during sex (condoms).
My question is the following: assuming that I do not have Lyme (I would need to get tested to be sure), how should my husband and I proceed ?
Is there a chance that he can pass it on to me sexually and then me to the fetus (I understand that him infecting directly the fetus is highly unlikely)?
Should I by precaution take the Lyme medication during pregnancy to ensure no contamination and then not breastfeed?
Of course, when the time comes we will be involving our obgyn and a specialist. This question is more for me to get an overview of what would happen.
Thank you in advance for your help and for taking the time to read my postÂ
Cheers
