Prescribed Prozac for Anxiety....But Terrified to Take It :(

Posted , 6 users are following.

I saw my GP this morning because the physical symptoms of my anxiety are becoming more difficult to manage (shakiness, heart palpitations, dizziness/unbalanced feeling, etc)....he prescribed 20mg of Prozac, but I am absoultely terrified to take it after having read all the horror stories from people who have had serious side effects....has anyone had a good experience with this drug? I think I'm most afraid of some sort of psychotic breakdown or permanently altered state of mind....am I being silly? I'm so mad at myself for Googling the side effects and for reading people's posts about the ways it ruined their lives....I need some relief from the anxiety (because, in all honesty, that's ruining my life too), but don't want to go from the frying pan into the fire. Good stories only, please...I'm scared enough! smile

Hi wearykitty, I have been on Prozac twice first time for a year and had a bit of a loose tum for a week and that was it and I'm back on them now been on them 7 wks and no bad  side affects apart from my tum again for about a week. It's given me my life back as I suffer from bad depression and couldn't function to well. My experience is a good one both times so I would say give it a good month for it to really start working. Good luck let me know how you get on Karen

    Hi Wearykitty,

Have faith in what you have been prescribed. I was given Prozac 20mg and I braced myself for the side effects. It lasted for 2 weeks and I finally saw some improvement. I had no negative thoughts, no panic attacks but a little background anxiety. Now at the 9th week of meds, I feel better but I just have trouble sleeping (which is much better than before). I suggest you stick to it and see how it goes. Be positive and it will take you far.

Hey sorry your having a hard time i was on this board about 6 months ago, i had a complete breakdown was having panic attacks daily and therapy aswell. I decided to try prozac as i had nothing do lose by doing so. Some meds work some dont everybodys different. I can honestly say i feel like iv woken out of a coma, i had no idea how far gone i was till one day i woke up and i could smile and laugh and not worry myself about stupid about siĺly things. When i first started taking prozac i was a fagile shell of a person and for the first 3-4 weeks on prozac i went into another level of suffering. i took 2 weeks off work and did not leave the house once. But once i got passed that i got better and better till i felt these best i have felt for probably over 10 years. Drugs are not for everyone they are not a cure for your problems but they can support you untill your strong enough to live without them. I dont regret it, i wish i done it a long time ago as i made mistakes and lost alot as i wasnt myself for so long.

I completely understand your feelings. I have been on prozac for about 10 days. I have noticed improvement but also noticed some side affects too. All I see are horror stories and would like positive feedback only. Im hoping in another week all side affects will be gone.
