Problems

Need opinions. I had bilateral cataract surgery back in October 2017. My right eye done first which is my dominant eye. This has a symphony lens for distance. 3 weeks later I had left eye done with a symphony multi focal lens. After both surgeries in January I had a cloudy film again which was opacifiaction and Dr said with a simple yag laser it would be good to go. So I got both eyes done in January. After that the stuff that was lasered off my eyes was like shards off glass in my field of vision. He assured me this would subside. Well after 5 months it did not so I met with a retina specialist and had a vitrectomy which was the best thing I’ve done yet. He said it was like I had tinsel for better words scattered in my eye. Now it’s time to get the left eye done in a few weeks. Having said all of this I am getting extreme eye tension headaches due to not so great vision. It’s like there is a spot in my field of vision that the lenses are fighting over one another. I am really regretting getting the two different lenses now and my eyes battle each other everyday. I really don’t know what to do. Should I consider lasik or a piggyback lens to get better vision. I can’t deal with these terrible headaches everyday. Any thoughts or help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance

I'm not quite sure but I think I've heard that once you have received YAG treatment you can't change the lenses because the bag it's attached to is destroyed in the process. I hope I'm wrong in your case as I can only imagine the problems you are having . I have a standard len and a toric lens and have experienced issues over the past 5 months that has me wishing I left my cataracts alone. I was considering multi- focus lenses for both eyes but was warned off by a friend for which I am eternally grateful. Good luck I hope it works out for you.

Are you sure you have Symfony lenses? They are extended depth of focus (EDOF) which provide a continuous range of focus from 18 inches to distance with no drop off in the mid that many multifocals lenses experience and they are not ‘distance’ lenses.
That being said it sounds like one eye has good vision after retina specialist performed vitrectomy. Would that procedure also correct 2nd eye? Symfony lenses should balance out your vision and you shouldn’t need a piggyback lens unless there is another issue going on. Was your vision good after the October surgeries and then become cloudy due to PCO? What is your surgeon saying is cause for poor vision?

Hi george05887,
1) In your last discussion posted 3 months ago, you mentioned having 2 Symfony lenses, "One for up close and one for distance. " That is the confusing part. Could it be that your right eye was implanted with a Tecnis monofocal (set for distance), and your left eye a Tecnis multifocal lens. Tecnis Symfony EDoF lens is also from the same lens manufacturer Tecnis.
2) Your discussion posted 5 months ago, you had YAG on both eyes twice; first in January and then again in April or May, which improved your vision "25% better."
3) Then in May / June, your retina specialist did a vitrectomy on your right eye; and he will do the same for your left eye in a few weeks to clean up the vitreous humor.
4) Your question of "Lasik" or "piggyback lens" - if you still are not seeing clearly after YAG and vitrrectomy, you may want to ask your eye-specialist(s) for a macular OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography).
All the best,
Jantje
