Recently PSA testing is being offer on a much wider scale with hospitals having open days for testing with up to 250 men turning up. This week The Lions Club
in Reading sponsored testing at the local Circle hospital and were taken by surprise when about 2,500 turned up and were lined up round the block. Last year 1,500 were tested with a hundred called back after positive tests.

A standard PSA test measures the total PSA in the blood. But PSA has different forms. It can either be:
bound – attached to a protein in the blood
free – not attached to a protein
As far back as 1996 my local hospital was given funds to do the FREE PSA test but the accountants decided not to carry on after the trials although the urologists thought it was the better option.
It is obvious from figures posters quote that their readings are from the standard bound PSA test.
At the time I got my GP to take blood and I paid for it to be sent to one of the few labs that did the test. I then had to explain the result to my GP.
