Psoas pain post hip replacement

Posted , 10 users are following.

hi everyone. I had RTHR may 2019 and most things going well. had R upper thigh pain most of the time and cramps when lying flat. not really easing. I'm assuming this is psoas pain either from the cup irritating the ligament / muscle or the cement that's holding it in - as sometimes it can overhang. I've got an appt with my dr in a couple of weeks - soonest appt- but just wondered if many / any others had this post OP?

googled it and says can be treated by steroid injection / surgery depends on cause.

thanks for any comments

    hi

Iwon,t go into all my drama , but after my 3rd surgery which was April 2019 I still have groin pain and burning . I was told in time it will ease , so i just keep pushing forward .

If your still worried push to get x ray or scans to see if all ok good luck

hi. yes that's my intention. I'm not due at the hospital again till next may so I'm hoping my gp refers me back in. if not I'll be ringing my consultant secretary for a review. I'm sure I need a steroid injection . looking at all the info it looks like after xray they do that first before or if any surgery needed. I'm hoping this is simple.

sorry yours has been complicated but thx for your reply and best wishes 😃

I have scans xrays and injections. Still in pain.

I have had a second opinion and now am seeing a proffessor who specialises in revision surgery!!

    hi Julie,

Sorry to hear of your ongoing pain. I am in a very similar situation, I had R hip replacement in November 2017 and am still having groin pain despite xrays, ultrasound sound guided injections (3), hip aspiration, bone scan and recently a ct scan.

The results seem to indicate the psoas is ok, but I'm not so sure. The symptoms are classic psoas problems ie stairs, in/out of car etc. Possibly a problem with the cup as you mention.

The hospital I attend is a Centre of Excellence for hip surgery , the Drs fantastic .Almost two years since the op, didn't anticipate being in this situation. Have an appointment next week .

Hope you have some relief from the pain and your Dr. suggests zone investigations

    Take care

hi. thx for your reply yes I'm hopeful but time will tell. its sort of comforting tho that this isnt uncommon . otc ibuprofen do help a lot and paracetamol doesn't so by that i know it's due to something swollen/ inflamed.

my hosp has a great reputation for hip surgery too so I'm not worried from that aspect and compared to my pain and mobility pre OP this is nothing .

Hi Julie, I had my left replaced on Sept 18.2019. No pain from the hip socket area. Just soreness from upper thigh muscles in the front and rear side of leg. Pt exercises help a lot but sometimes I have over done them. I can walk the 500 feet to our mail box but I'm slow at it. I don't know how old you are but for me, I'll be 66 in a few weeks and I'm like a trapped dog in the house . I just have to take it slow. I have been told I think like a 42 year old. Patience and do the PT exercises, gently!

      hi. I'm 62 😃

yes I did wonder if I'd over done the exercises so now I use what I can only describe as pilates technique and do them slower which has eased. I can walk just over a mile in a day and often do ( generally in 2/3 walks each day besides walking in the house etc).

my soreness is into the groin area and top of the thigh -centre area which is where I believe the psoas area is.

I've upped my NSAIDs today which has eased it but I'd thought by now (I'm almost 20 weeks post op) it should've settled. anyway I have a drs appt in a few weeks time so I'll see what they say.

thx for your comment and hope your recovery goes well

Hi eabill its still quite early days for you .I too had LHR on 17 September 2019. Do be careful not to overdo the excercises, they stressed that to me on discharge.I found the first 2 weeks were the most difficult , lots of pain, the meds made me sleepy in the daytime and restless at night.Like many on here it was just a matter of watching rubbish tv during the night to pass time .I still get many nights like that and feel i need to break the cycle soon. The pain has improved in the hip area but I'm finding my knee uncomfortable .I was told or read somewhere that they use the knee for leverage in surgery hence the pain after. Has anyone had similar.? I had my right hip replaced 10 yrs ago and other than the knee issue now I am recovering much quicker this time .The days do get a bit tedious but the recovery time will hopefully be worth it .I find i need to rest most afternoons as the energy levels suddenly drop..Not sure if some of this is just pure boredom. I do occasionally forget my hip precautions and frighten the life out of myself imagining all dorts of horrors 😮

Are you still using 2 crutches? I can manage with one indoors and have noticed occasionally I forget them all together and find my self walking without.

I think us hippies just need to be really kind to ourselves and look forward to being fully mobile again and try and enjoy the recovery time.

Take good care and gently does it 😊

hi julie - i am going into day 8 and the cramping/muscle pain is driving me up the wall. It is interesting reading the threads as lots of people doing excercises. On discharge from hospital, I was told that i did not need to do anything specific but just practise with the walking. Could your dr arrange for you to have another x ray to make sure things are healing ok?

hi. yes I didn't start the exercises in earnest till abt 7 days and then as per advice from physio started at 3 x each one abt twice a day and gradually built them up to the max they advised. I stupidly did abt 10 one night in hospital and did my muscle burn over night. that's when the physio sd I'd over done it. everyones different but its trial and error really. I only now get the muscle spasm on waking in a morning - not sure if its cos I've been in one position most of the night or what.

yes I'm going to see dr next week ( earliest routine appt) and I'm hoping / suggesting to them re xray but I'm also hoping theyll contact my surgeon if they dont then I'm ringing his secretary. I'm a retired nurse and atm I'm trying to do it the normal patient way but if that doesn't work I'll go into nurse mode lol.

anyway best wishes in your recovery. it really does start to improve daily from ant 2 weeks. even mine now compared to pre OP I'm very happy without the severe pain and immobility I had. I'd like to think im a young 62 😃
