Hi for the last couple of months I have experienced a rapid thumping sound in might right ear, like a  very fast heart beat.

it only seems to happen at night and is driving me mad.

some nights it wakes me up At 3 or 4 in the morning.

i have been to my GP and he is arranging for me to visit ENT specialist at my local hospital and a head scan.

does anyone know what this could be?

I had the same issue, but now it seems to be gone!  Here's what worked for me.

I had a rapid thumping (5x per second) in my left ear.  It occurred only in the evening on most nights, and ALWAYS occurred after a couple of drinks.

I went to an ENT, who found lots of dried wax, hair, etc. on my eardrum.

After cleaning it as well as he could, the problem disappeared!  So before assuming tinnitus, please visit a specialist and have them carefully check and clean (if necessary) your eardrums.  Maybe there are some over-the-counter drops you could try first...I'm not really sure.

    Good luck, hope that helps!

Ear stuff is hellish. I have all weird tinnitus and a sonogram sound. I see an acuounturist for soasms  and such in the ear. Online they have info but when you go to the ent they look at your stupid. Its awful!  Defintely a lot of this has to do with some kind of inflammation. I was fine before i had a sinus infection then the flu.

Dr. Are useless because there is no cause for the thumping. So once they do all the test and everything is normal it comes down to stress and anxiety. I'm still trying to convince myself as all my testing are normal

Hi Andrew, I have been having the same thumping sound in my right ear for a couple of years as well and the ENT specialist I consulted hasn't helped me in any way. Please if you have found a solution to your own problem I'll like to hear about it.

I too have the rapid thumping in my right ear. A Magnesium supplement worked for a couple weeks, then it was back. The only thing that really works for me is exercise. A good half hour of fairly rigorous exercise will make the thumping disappear for almost the whole day. Tells me my problem is probably stress and blood pressure.

Mine is still thumping away, 18 months now, bearabkle, sometimes worse than others, especially if I become stressed at all... tried magnesium calcium everything in fact... not sure what else I can do, as although it is bearable it still can be really annoying, it is at the moment, having tmj doesnt help as when jaw plays up the thumping gets worse....I just pray it never goes back to the way it started, it was unbearable, so loud, I couldnt sleep, or concentrate during the day, it overoad everything, and was really frightening.... so after seeing 3 doctors, a nurse and an mri I am still none the wiser...hope some of you will get yours sorted better than me...

Muscular tinnitus. Its so awful. Usually you have ither tinnitus issues as well and probably tmj. They do an acoustic reflex test to see if your membrane is working. Its like a tic in the system.  You can get sound sensitive too. Its all awful. tensor tympani or staepidus muscles go awry. Most ent do nothing, head and neck surgeon can snip muscles but not so good to do can never fix it and it creates ither issues. Also pulsitile tinnitus can occr. They lie on google and say how the ents can find and fix. They don't do much at all. This has basically ruined my life.

I actually ended up in the er because of mine. I was told that it was definitely tmj. And a severe case of it. I have to get an appointment with ent to get it fixed but mine drives me crazy. I have bad migraines anyway but since this started I feel like I'm going batty. Anyway, I hope this helps and thanks for the tips.
