Hi for the last couple of months I have experienced a rapid thumping sound in might right ear, like a  very fast heart beat.

it only seems to happen at night and is driving me mad.

some nights it wakes me up At 3 or 4 in the morning.

i have been to my GP and he is arranging for me to visit ENT specialist at my local hospital and a head scan.

does anyone know what this could be?

Please help!! This rapid thumping / thudding sound started 5 nights ago and hasn't stopped since. The doctor wouldn't see me for a 'same day' appointment as she said it wasn't an emergency. She said it was probably viral and that I should 'sit it out' for the next 7-10 days. I found this discussion last night and took on the suggestions. It's currently 3:40am, I have cotton wool in my ear, took a sleeping tablet, went out and bought magnesium supplements which I took straight away, along with a load of pumpkin seeds before bed. Nothing seems to be working. I have an appointment with the doctor on Monday and I'm hoping that the magnesium will kick in soon. Just this, with trying to manage working and being a mum of three is making me feel like I'm going crazy!

dont worry,i know how you feel,it will not go on for ever, dont lose time going to doctors, you will just spend money,it minght stop in 2 or 3 days then it will start again,or stop for years there will be a big rest in the summer for it to start again the same period it started this year, depends all on the actmosfere pressure in you country,if you look out,you will see every time it starts to change whether it starts, just relax, mor you worry mor hard you feel it,whan you go to bed just put your hand to your ears and you  see it stops,of put ear plugs in,or put music on.

      Hi Claire

Stay calm it’s nothing serious it’s just annoying. I am a mom of two kids and deal with this frequently.  After all the testing. I have brought it down to stress!!! Are you very stressed ???  Give magnesium a couple of days to kick in.   When you go to the dr.  To see an ETN specialist and ask for a MRI just to ease your mind thinking it’s something serious like the rest of us did.

Thank you so much. You're reply alone made me feel calmer. I'm from the uk so visiting the doctors doesn't cost but we have been having some extreme weather.. severe snow this last week so it has made me wonder if this has been one of the causes perhaps.

Thank you for your reply. I do have a stressful life, so it wouldn't surprise me if this was something to do with it jut nothing in particular has happened just everyday things and the only thing stressing me out round now is the thudding! Just wish it would stop. It's day 6 and 10pm so I am going to try and settle down for the night,, cotton wool in, stronger sleeping tablets and fingers crossed. Thank you again for your reply. It means a lot.

      Hi Claire,

Wondering how the rapid thumping issue is?  I did have same about 10 years ago and went away but now back intermittently- Just had it on my vacation to Italy and it ruined my trip- Went to ear doctor this am and he said just the muscle in ear and not much to do- Yikes!  At the moment I am fine but worried- Did the magnesium help?  I hope that your thumping sound is gone-

I had a rapid thumping in my ear a few years ago.  I was told it was fluid in the ear.  I was told to use flonase and take Zyrtec daily and that it could take three months to go away.  By the third month I still had the same issue so I added suphedrine maximum strength and a month later it was gone.  I wouldn’t just randomly decide to take magnesium tablets unless you’re sure you have a magnesium deficiency.  I did that and I ended up getting one of those huge tablets stuck in my throat and it made things worse.

      Dear Jayne20607,

My advice is go see the ENT as advised by your DR. Give your ENT a chance. I am unclear if it was the buildup that was present in your ear for a month already or the buildup and thumping noises that were present in your ear for a month already. Anyway, give yourself about 3 - 6 months or maybe more to get the problem sorted out. Otherwise, seek alternative therapy. I gave myself quite a long while, can't remember the timeline but I do remember seeing 3 ENTs and spending lots of $$$$$ and time but to no avail. Then, I switched to alternative therapy and it is getting better. I can be contacted at if you need more info on alternative therapy.

I have the same problem and waiting for an MRI scan. I find that if in bed I tilt my head up or down and find a good position, it stops. Hope this helps in the meantime.

    Hi there,

I am so relieved to have found this thread. I too have this awful thumping in my right ear and when I put my hand over the ear or put my finger inside ear it totally stops. I started taking the magnesium yesterday so am hoping that this will make a difference. I have extremely mild tinnitus in left ear which i think is subsiding but still annoying non the less. one thing i have noticed with the thumping is when i took diazapham (cant spell) it subsided greatly and am wondering if that is because it is a muscle relaxant? Thanks x
