Recurring problems with acid

Hi - Back in August, on return from holiday I started to suffer from really bad heartburn. At times it felt like a hot rod going straight through my chest and out the back, the pain was so bad, that I was worried that I was having a heart attack. I felt this might have been caused by perhaps eating different food and drinking more whilst on holiday, but as the weeks wore on the symptoms became more frequent with strange stabbing pains all over my chest, a dull, knawing ache in the middle of my chest, a feeling as if my oesophagus was swollen and dreadful acid reflux and pain waking me up several times every night.

I eventually went to see my G.P. who put me on Lansopraxole 30 mg once daily. Since starting the medication, it took about 10 days for the reflux to settle down but I have been feeling constantly sick. I have my suspicions that it is the medication that is making me feel so nauseous but if I stop I am really worried about the relux returning.

It was 13 years ago when I suffered from a similar problem and was treated for the Helicabactor Pylori bacteria (sorry spelling?) and I was just wondering how many people have had a recurrence of this problem?

hi Jan003 sorry your feeling poorly i know how you feel. Short and sweet i was told by the gastro specialist that its rare for heli bactor to re accur if you have had treatment for it before. i had it and had the triple treatment and then had tests which came back clear. your gp should be able to take a stool sample and send it off to be checked just to be sure its not there.

hope you have a great christmas (as best you can) and 2008 will surely be better for us all

I had really bad acid reflux and GP put me on medication but about three weeks later I (unrelatedly) went on a low-carb diet and the acid reflux completely disappeared. No pasta, potatoes or bread products = no acid reflux. I still stick to the diet fairly well - eating lot of green veg instead of stodgy carbs and it's only if I eat the occasional starchy carb that it comes back. Definately worth a try.
