Reduction question.. 40-30-40-30 or cut tablets to make 35mg?

My doctor has told me to start reduction as 40-30-40-30 and this basically will equate to 35mg a day.  However I have read in many places that this can cause 'up and down' problems and that it's best to cut the tablets using a pill cutter, so i would cut them to make 35mg and take this daily.  Does anyone have any experience of this? Thank you.

I got some 10mgs off the Doctor and went from 20 to 10 but had some downers.I used exercise and any positive things to help me get past this, and will see how it goes. I have heard of a liquid version, other maybe able to advise

    Hi fraggle,

Theoretically 40-30-40-30 shouldn't make a lot of difference because of the long half-life of Cit in the body.  Cit's half-life is around 35 hours or just under a day and a half.  What this means is that when you take a 40mg tablet 35 hours later there is still 20mg of that tablebet left in the body, another 35 hours later there is still 10mg left, 35 hours later there is 5mg left and so on and so forth.  Because Cit is taken once a day it builds up in the body to around 2.5 times the original dose so after about 10 days a daily 40mg tablet will build up to a peak of just over 100mg after you take a tablet and drop to around 65mg just before you take the next tablet.  This natural variation of the amount of Cit in the body may be exaggerated by 40-30-40-30 but should settle down after ten days.  That's just theory though.  Everybody is different.  I've done 20-30-20-30 and 30-40-30-40 without any problems but I was increasing the dose rather than decreasing it.  Which ever way you do it it's more important to take your time and not rush the reduction in dose.  I hope it works out OK for you.

I spent a year coming off these and did it by reducing by 5mg each time over 1-2 months each reductiong.  This way I had no withdrawal at all.  I bought a pill cutter and went from 20 / 15 / 10 / 5 / 2.5 / 1.25 / 0 and had to crush the last 2 doses as they were too small to cut any further.  Personally I don't see any benefit hopping from 40-30-40-30.  I came off these some years earlier and had reduced by 10mg each time and sufferred withdrawal, so second time around decided to do it by the minimal amount.  Worked great.

How could you measure so small? A sensitive weighing scales?

Was that from a 20mg tablet?

Do you mean my doses? wink

I cut up a 20mg tablet into 4 making 5mg pieces, and when the time came to reduce even further I crushed one of the 5mg pieces and divided the powder first into 2 to get the 2.5mg and a month later divided the powder further to 1.25mg.  Dividing the powder is really hit and miss as you can't get an accurate measurement really ... the 1.25mg dose became a teensy bit of powder smile
