Hey  I am 70 yrs old and a builder  by trade and  in the last few months experienced severe pain in the right hip joint.  sometimes a short  extreme pain which  starts in my  hip area and travels to below the knee   but last only 2-3 seconds    ,,background pain is less intense but  con ti uous. Xrays reveal  bone  damage at the joint but not  bad enough for intervention.   so..  just how bad does it have to get before i can expect some relief.  painkillers  offer temp  relief but im told can make  working parctices dangerous because of drowsiness ..  devil and the deep blue sea if you ask me     .

Well in my case im 19 and have been going for my consultations since 16 for my hip op. I was always told come back in a year but if you cant cope come to me. You literally have to be in so much pain you cant handle everyday life. I was tols to leave work and have been put on the sick. I was recently put on tramadol but even they dont be particularally work. But your pain has to be so intense it is effecting your life as far as i can tell before they will consider the operation

I found Voltarol 12 hour gel quite good at that stage. Also heat pads - ones you stick directly on your skin or onto your clothes ( the latter are much cheaper).

    Hi reg,

The pain will get worse yet if my own experience is anything to go by. The pain killers are OK but your body gradually gets used to them so they become less effective. You have done well to work through the pain so far but could find it gets harder and harder to carry on. Trouble is, doctors and health professionals assume we just sit at home watching TV and therefore do not need our hips and knees to function properly. Maybe I am being a bit harsh but that was how it felt to me.

So thankful I have had my new hipwhen I did. Hope you can get yours as soon as you would wish.

I know how you feel,I'm not sure how bad pain can be before you can see a consultant.

One dr told me both my hip have arthritis right one worse.my life is on hold at the moment .

I'm going to see a physio on Tuesday private. I have oppointment on nhs but it's not untill the end of Feb.

I would keep going back to see your gp especially if your pain killers don't help.

Fill in the Oxford Hip Score (Google it) and take to your doctor if your score indicates something needs to be done. May help to get you nearer a possible replacement appointment.

I just did mine just for fun and got a score of 14 which confused me until i realised it was a score that said you needed surgery. Thought a lower score would have been a good sign and a high score meant surgery but thats just me 😂

      Hi sarah,

Same here, I filled it in as I would have done before my op.

Nobody ever bothered to ask me any of those questions!sad

Shirley - I did the same, before my first surgery and got a 6, and then did it again for now, with my not so good left hip replacement and got a 16.  hahahahah, as you can understand, I'm not laughing.

That is awful - no joke. When did you have the second hip replacement - sorry I have forgotten if you told us before. Hip replacements do seem to vary in success rate - even in the same patient.

16 February this year, have been back to hospital three times to see specialist, and only saw his registrars. I feel as though I am being put in the tooo hard basket. I have now taken my case to the Obudsman, hopefully get some result there, if not will be seeing a lawyer.

Sounds like I was lucky then as a physio who assessed me before I was sent on to hip surgeon went through it with me and I was referred on because of my score.

How come you had to go through a physio to see a hip doctor?

I am in Cromer Norfolk, and that is exactly what happened to me, saw the physio first who assed me and she confirmed that i needed hip replacement as according to the xrays, it was moderate to severe, that was last september 2014, saw consultant at the end of december, he had a look at the xray, then just did one movement with my hips, and said he had seen enough, and said that xray showed both hips were bad, bone on bone and here i am first op in may this year and exactly 6 months later 2nd hip done. i never did the score sheet didnt even know that there was one. on record it said i had advanced osteoarthritis,
