RTHR June 2012 and revision March, 2017

Posted , 5 users are following.

March, 2012 I fell, fractured right hip. Had a hip pinning, then in June 2012 the hip pinning didn't work ( was in horrid pain for the 3 months) so I then had a RTHR. In 2013 I had bursitis and had the bursa sacs removed. 3 surgeries anterior approach in same incision.

?Still was in pain. March, 2017 I had a revision of the cup and ball ( as the first surgeon had put the "wrong size in"wink. The surgeon had told me at my 6 weeks that the previous thr had dislocated. 90 degree for 3 months. At my 6 week check-up surgeon started op pt with 90 degree still. When I went back at 3 months surgeon stopped physical therapy. Here I am at 6 months and still having pain. Called surgeon - was told since the previous RTHR had not been put in correctly, ligaments, soft tissue, nerves, muscles etc have all been damaged. But no suggestion on what to do except to say it will take me 2 years to recuperate. Only taking Advil and Tylenol and wearing Icy Hot patches. I walk with a rollator walker and think I overdid one day and my right butt really hurts now also along with side, groin and the IT band ( surgeon knows it is tight but said there isn't anything he can do to stretch it). Has anyone else been through this? I am open to any and all suggestions. Sorry for soo long. Thank You.

    dear Charlotte,

Goodness, what a journey, darling ...

You know, it is not unusual to still have pain at 6 months post-op THR and certainly if it is a revision hip surgery-

The old hardware needs to be removed, repaired, surface prepared to have new hardware put in etc ...

Your surgeon is right, I think - your body needs a lot of time to repair the damages -  In addition you also are trying to get moving, walking etc. -

Everything is still so delicate and fragile and it is easy to overdo it ...

Keep using your rollator - it is great for keeping you balanced - just make sure you walk properly and your posture is correct -

Is the Advil and Tylenol helping you for the pain?   Maybe you can ask for stronger medication ...

How about some massages to help soften and lengthen your muscles ?

Take care and come here any time

    Big warm hug

    renee

Thank you Renee for your suggestions and kind words. I need to remember this isn't just an overnight or 6 week recovery like some other surgeries. My Dr. is not allowed to give anything stronger due to the opiate epidemic, which is really sad for those of us who could use something a little stronger than Advil and Tylenol.

I have started taking Magnesium as I read that it helps to repair muscles, soft tissue etc. I have often wondered about your suggestion on massages, although my insurance doesn't cover massages.

      hi charlotte,

interesting ... I don't understand how your doctor is not allowed to prescribe you pain medication after a hip replacement surgery --- it is not a tooth ache (even though that can be painful too) -

Massages can be a part of  physical therapy  program ... do you have PT covered by your insurance ?

I hope some solution will come to you soon, darling

      Hi Renee,

?I had pain medication through May, then Dr. said " I can't give you anything else.Do you want me to go to jail?" I had been on hydrocodone since June 2012 when I had my THR. I am hearing of others that can no longer get pain medication either. Just really sad.

?I did go to PT from April - May then surgeon said he doesn't think I need anymore. The place where I was going told me that my insurance covers physical therapy exercises but not massages.

      What a deal.

I also hope I can find some solutions also.

      Thank You Renee.

      How are you?

Good morning Charlotte.  I'm sorry you are still having so much pain. It's hard when you're in pain every day.   Here's my story.  I had rhr last July.  I was almost 2 inches short before surgery.  I told my dr to please not over stretch me because I didn't want drop foot and he promised me he wouldn't.  Thank God I didn't get that.  3 weeks later I find out I dislocated it. 2 days later I'm having a total hip revision.  Was 6 weeks non weight bearing and no hip exercises or hip flexion past 80 degrees.  Was a very hard time for me.  I too was diagnosed with bursitis and tendonitis. My whole side of hip and thigh were painful.  During pt they massaged my side thigh muscles and got out a lot of the knots.  But then came nerve pain and sensitivity. A whole other issue.  My IT band is pretty stretched too. Along with the muscles and tissues and nerves because I got back my length in leg.  Have you tried icing and heat?  That works very well.   Also massaging I know it can be quite painful but it really helps.  Now yesterday I discovered that going into whirlpool is pretty beneficial.  I had those jets of water hitting the side of hip and thigh. Man talk about sore!!  I didn't realize how sore those areas were still and I'm a year out!!   Not to mention the heat of the water is soothing.   Also steam room.  Sweating out the toxins. And getting into pool even if to walk around.   Do you think you have access to these?   Are the pain meds you are on helping you?  That too is important to be pain free.  Walking is good to help build those muscles.  Also clams are good too.   I take tramadol only when I need it and usually half a pill.  Wishing you all the best and God's blessings to you for a speedy recovery and healing.   Hugs 🤗Linda

Hi Linda. How are you feeling now? better I hope. My prayers are with you. I have a friend that has a whirlpool but wasn't sure if I can sit that low for one and also whether the jets would harm the hip. I will check on where to go for a steam room.

?I'm sorry you had to go through all you've been through also.

      Thank you for your suggestions.

      I will advise.

      God's Blessings to you also.

Afternoon!  Well I go to gym whirlpool they are larger and have steps to walk in.  I don't think the jets would bother the hip.  The water is therapeutic.  But if you still have hip precautions I would ask your dr.  I'm a year out but am very precautious since I dislocated my hip.  I think I baby it too much but that....for me, was a very traumatic ordeal.   I'm ok.  I just can't deal with this nerve pain.   I'm really thinking it could be the tendonitis and bursitis because to me it always seems likely hip and thigh are swollen not a whole lot, but I think enough to be pressing on the nerve.   I'm going to bring that up to my doctor tomorrow.   Wishing you all the best.  Hugs Linda.

I am getting down in the dumps with this pain and not being able to do much of anything. I was so hoping that the OS would have been wrong and by now could be taking day trips, going to fall festivals and enjoying life. Ever since I retired in 2009 I have almost had one surgery after another. 9 months after 50% kidney removed due to internal and external cysts. Surgery was done by robot which knicked my gall bladder and 2 months later had to have it removed. I went over a year then I fell and not been well or happy since.

    Thanks to all for listening.

Dear Charlotte I think we all feel the same way you do two different degrees I also am down, this dislocation after five weeks postop surgery was done January 9 2017, l am 58 , l had two  fusion and a revision on my spine  L3 -4 back in 96 and 98 I got hurt on the job doing construction,  l also had a knee replacement in 2011 and I needed a revision 6 months later on the same side that I had the hip replacement  dislocation ,  I feel so broken you wouldn't believe it and in so much pain and there's nothing scheduled ,  and it's good you expressed yourself ,you have a right to be who you are where you are and how you are,  as we all do . Silence and Pain is a bad mix , One day at a time as they say sometimes one second at a time, l am laying here wrapped in ice ,   I hope you feel better  l pray you feel better. Mike

Dear Charlotte....I know it's hard.  I cried every day for months!   I still do as I'm not completely out of pain.  Like you I was hoping for a better life without pain, enjoying my family again, going out.....still not there.  I sometimes regret ever doing this but I think back to when I was in so much pain then too.  My faith was low at times almost to just not believing but there were a few people who pulled me through.  At times i wanted to throw in the towel but then my little granddaughter would bust in my door rushing to my bed to give me a hug and telling me I'm her best friend!! 😥💖💝.  She always tells me " that leg hurts right grandma 👵🏽 ". And she tells me she will rub it, I cringe as she does as it's so sensitive lol 😂.  I really think all will come out ok just have to be patient which I know is the hardest thing to do when your in pain.  Having faith and good positive people around you.  Like us!! 😁   You can always come here!  Hugs 🤗 Linda

Thank you Linda for your encouraging words. I have been in pain over 5 years and it gets old.

?I am almost 64 and often wonder if I will ever be without pain or this much pain especially where I can walk by myself without this silly walker. I know it more than likely isn't the correct way, but soo embarrassed to take my walker with me when walking into the grocery store for few things. When I get in I do push a cart and take it to the car with me. I have a cane but too unsure of myself when I use it as I limp and am wobbly with it - yes,pt showed me how to walk with it, just don't feel secure with it as of yet.

?I pray that the MRI shows the cause of your pain and you get answers real soon. Must be horrible to live with the pain and tenderness you do on a all day basis.

      God's Blessings.

Sometimes we have complications for various reasons and we never expect it to happen to us.

I had a very painful and difficult hip Thr & the manufacturer recalled the implant a few months after surgery.  5 years waited for hip revision and crippled. Long story , but now since proper revision I can do all the things I love to do and you will too! Keep up your spirits ans never lose hope and always be strong and fight for what's right.

I totally get where you are coming from. Hang in there it will get better. Realize your limitations until this is repaired properly. You will rise up!

Many healing blessings sent your way, 😀

Thank You hope4cure for your encouraging words. If you can get back to things you love to do, it gives me hope that I will also one day.

?That is one thing I seem to forget - know my limitations. I was feeling pretty good so thought I could plant some flowers in pots in June, walking with my rollater - knew by fall I could get around the block and one day walked half the block and have been hurting ever since.

?I still and have always thought that I can do things I did before my fall and then I get in pain and of course regret doing those things I love to do. Reading other posts I know I have to give it time as OS said 2 years.

So,I guess I better slow down and listen to my body

      But,

?I live alone and things have to get done and don't like asking for help from my friends. I guess I need to learn to ask.

?I really do want to be well and happy, but at the moment it is hard!!!!

      Hugs for you.

I am happy that you are once again doing things you Love.

Great reply. It's sounds like you have the courage to do what you need and to stay in a good place even asking for help.

I have found a gardener handyman and I do what I can and the gardeners/handyman does the rest.I learned the hard way to respect my limitations and it took time to adjust.

I also take care of my hubby as he is ill and can't do much at all. He took care of me for 33 years and now I am happy to take care of him! Life just throws all types of challenges at us as we age or even a accident can have lasting health issues.

Take care are just do small things to stay in shape ask your doc for physical therapy to manage your pain and maintain body strength! Find your own pace . It really helped me. . Good luck.

      Stay well and happy! 😊
