Scheduled for Green Light

Posted , 5 users are following.

I am a 62 yo with the typical symptoms of BPH with urinary retention after having a Urolift.  Prostatis and cancer via biopsy ruled out and restriction still visible with just dimples at site of 4 Urolift threads.

I am interested in post procedure results and recovery times.

Recovery from Green Light could take up to year regardless of what your urologist told you. Everyone is different.

Make sure your doctor is very experienced with the Greenlight procedure, and has a lot of good outcomes.  I had a bad outcome, and was left with high level incontinence due to damage of the external sphincter that caused strictures.  After 5 more various surgeries, I have an artificial sphincter.   I suspect that my first doctor was not well trained in doing GL procedures.

Thanks!  He is an expert at Greenlight and does it all in a very large group.

William.  I am sorry that you are having a problem  But you are the first person that I have heard of going into retention after a Urolift.   Maybe they did not put in enough clips.  I had the Urolift done when I was 58.  I'm 62 and I'm still wide open.  Is this the same doctor that did the Urolift  Before you have your prostate cut out.  I would get another opinion Something is not right.  Ken

Thanks!  No my Sr recommended a Turp but had me talk with the Greenlight specialist in the practice that is doing it.

Have you checked with the doctor that did your Urolift.  You may need more clips.  That has happen to many of the men not enough . One guy on here had 4 to start did not work.  Ended up with a total of 8  Works like new.  I hate to see you have something done that you don't have to have done.  Did the dooctor tell you that the Greenlight may not work either?????  Ken

Both Drs were reluctant on success with more clips and due to nature of restriction recommended Turp but Urolift Dr was open to me seeing partner who is expert at GL which speaks volume due to less chance of RGE.

I would never have any doctor cut any of my prostate out.  There must have been another problem.  Because if your prostate was the problem and it open it up you should have been fine.  Beside what the urolift did was make a tunnel.  The GL is going to do the same thing but cut a tunnel in your prostate and who knows if that is going to work.  No doctor can say if a procedure is going to work until its done but by then it to late  They can only suggest.  Good luck  Ken.

They are confident that GL or Turp are the best options with GL having a lower incidence of RGE, but told me to expect it.

Any procedure you have is up to you.  No one can make up your mind.  It is something I would not do.  I am not going to give up anything just to pee a little better.  I was told by a doctor in the UK that any procedure you have you do not have to get RE if the doctor take's there time and only get rid of the tissue that is the problem.  But most just go in and cut away and move on to the next.  Most doctor do not care about your sex life or RE they do not consider it a sexual function.  They just do the procedure and if something happen they just give you a little blue pill.  Just get all the information you can and remember you are the one that will have to deal with any of the side effects.  Not the doctor.  Take care and good luck with what every you decide God Bless  Ken.

I don't know all your case but are you still able to pee or are you in retention.  I have had kidney stone and I only have 1 1/2 kidneys My left kidney is defected and seat on my bladder.  I could care less what the doctor want.  I do what I want.  I was in the hospital in November. did not pee for 32 hours and the second time 17.  Had 7 pain full catheterzation even the one nurse started to cry.  She never saw anything like it.  My doctor did not come in and tell me you have to get rid of your prostate.  He knows me and he knows I would not have agree to it.  Also why are you worried about bladder and kidney damage.  Do you know that with any procedure he can still get them problems.  Before you have anything talk to your doctor and voice your concerns If you are worried about the sex nerves and RE tell him to only take the tissue that is doing the damage.  Do you also know that the sex nerves are attach to the prostate.  Talk to your doctor Life is to short to give up on anything  Ken

Has any one had a successful GL procedure?

If you've spent any amount of times on internet forums, you know that most of the posts are from people who have complaints.  Since this is the "Prostate problems" forum, it's not surprising that this is also the case here.  In fact, you are likely to hear from people who have not had the greenlight procedure but feel compelled to bad-mouth it based on things they've read.  I would discount any posts other than those of guys who have actually had this procedure.

I had it 10 days ago and with the exception of some burning in the tip of my penis I pee like I was in my terns and the shut off working like new also., will see about RGE in a few days.  My Dr eas also anle to remove all of my Urolift clips.

Sounds like it went well. Could you provide some more details? Did you stay overnight in the hospital? How long was the catheter in? How long was your urine bloody or pink?

I went home the same day.  The procedure was about 1.5 hours long with removing the Urolift clips.  Was in the hospital for about 5 hours.  I went home with a catheter overnight and had very minimal bleeding.  I noticed a little day 5.  The burning was controlled with AZO and I did not need pain meds.

Thanks. Looks like you had a great experience with an experienced greenlight surgeon.
