Scheduling BPH Procedures

Posted , 6 users are following.

I'm just curious what everyone's experience has been in being able to schedule any type of BPH procedure during this pandemic. I had a "virtual office visit" with my primary care doc yesterday and he said he is only seeing 2-3 patients/day in his office, which is normally a very busy practice.

Had a turp on feb 19th. Did not work.

They want to do another but can't even schedule yet, all bph surgery is ellective.

So I expect I'll be sitting for months with a catheter in me waiting....

Why are people still having TURP's when in my experience the laser procedures are much better. I had GL in 2004 and Thulium/Holmium in 2013 when it regrew. I had turned dow a TURP in 2005 knowing of it's many deficiencies including TUR Syndrome.

A few years ago on this Forum the mention of TURP brought the comment 'I thought they had stopped doing that years ago'

TURP Syndrome, or TUR syndrome, is an uncommon but serious complication of a specific type of prostate surgery. There are multiple types of prostate surgeries, but the TURP is one of the most common, and the one most closely associated with TUR syndrome.

During Trans Urethral Resection of the Prostate surgery (TURP), a sterile irrigation solution that is similar to water is used to keep the surgical area clean. This sterile fluid is also used to prevent the distribution of cancer cells, if they are present, by constantly washing out the surgical site. This constant rinsing of the surgical area is thought to prevent the spread of cancer by washing any cancer cells dislodged by the procedure out of the body with the fluid.

Large quantities of this sterile solution are used to perform the constant flushing during the procedure. If this solution is low in sodium, and the body absorbs too much of the fluid, the sodium level in the entire body can fall rapidly. This condition is called hyponatremia and can be quite serious, and even life-threatening in severe cases.

TUR Syndrome is associated only with monopolar TURP, not bipolar TURP or plasma button. The same type of irrigation solution is used in bipolar as is used in laser procedures.

Many posters don't specify which TURP they have had.

    russ_777,

    .

I am in regular contact with a long-time friend who works at the local hospital about a 5 minute drive from me. She says that elective procedures have been cancelled in preparation for the COVID-19 surge.

    .

This is probably not the best time to have a BPH procedure. Having self-cathed for over 10 months, I get it on being tired of waiting to get the procedure done, but catheters can get you through the wait.

Not quite, Lester. I was referring to my GP who performs no surgical procedures. I was actually curious to see what is considered elective by most urologists. Personally, I would not get near a hospital that's treated any number of COVID patients to have a procedure done unless that was my only option and I was on the verge of kidney failure. Three of the urologists I've seen have their own dedicated outpatient surgical centers that do nothing but urological procedures. I haven't been in touch with any of them to see if they consider me "elective."

    Hey everyone

    Update :

Had my second turp 3 weeks ago. And eureeka it worked I can pee !!!! Thats after nearly 7 months with an in dwelling catheter.

Regular turp done again, they removed 35 grams of tissue. So of course retrograde ejac but I guess I will have to learn to live with that.

Flow is nothing great , just ok. Sometimes even weak. But getting my life back is worth it.

Hoping to get back to the gym once the covid lock down is eased here in Ontario.

Of course after so long and so many failed attempts, I keep thinking every time I go, that this time I will be blocked again. I guess it will take awhile to be confident I'm cured !
