my doctor says it is sciatica even thou I haven't had any X-rays she has prescribed me naproxen and gabapentin, are my symptoms typical of sciatica
And is anyone else on gabapentin as all they seen to do is make me drowsy.

Hi Angela, Do you wake up in the morning with a severe back pain? Well, it seems that the symptoms you have described here, points out to sciatica. Back pain can occur anywhere along your spine. It is important to lay down your body flat, with continuous support from the surface/ mattress, in a constant manner (especially while sleeping).
Try changing your mattress, if its too old, or have exceeded 7 years. People with sciatica, should never use too-firm mattresses, nor too soft. It puts much pressure on the body, causing lower backaches. Instead, they should look for a mattress, that privides maximum spinal support. If there are gaps between the top layer mattress and your body, it means you are not getting the full support that you need. There are many mattresses available in the store. Check for Tuft and Needle 10” mattress. They are polyurethane foam mattresses that has recieved huge appraises from the users. The mattress has got a 5-star rating from almost every sciatica/ back painers.
Apart from Tuft and Needle, latex mattresses are considered the best mattress for back pain. Its a natural mattress, and provides relief throughout the night and in the morning, with it's effective spring action formula. Some users have reported latex mattresses to smell bad. But the DreamFoam bedding (latex) or the Casper latex mattress, doesn't have such issues reported.
I hope changing your mattress to a latex mattress, can help you from sciatica pain, to a great extent.

Angela.
Have you tried a tens machine. Can be a help and you can get them from any chemist. Won't get rid of the pain but does help.
I've had sciatica in both legs for the last year. Comes and goes with pain. I'm on cocoadamol. Gabapentin made me feel like a zombie. I was told surgery wasn't an option. Now being told something different. Different Dr's.
It's hard to make sense of it. The mri will show a disc bulge and it's crazy having to wait that long.
I'm disappointed that you have to wait that long. Just going through the rounds of more physio appts.
Good luck the pain is awful.

Hi Angela29594. I've come down with a bad case of sciatica. My symptoms and treatment are very similar to yours. I'd be very interested to know whether you've now recovered and how long the recovery took.
Best wishes.

Hello there. Sciatica doesn't exist. Doctors say that when they don't know what you've got precisely and then fill you upwith heavy metal drugs that don't cure anything but are poison for your kidneys and liver. BUT yes normally nerve pain is dealt with Gabpentin and + Celebrex or Lyrica & Celebrex. Here we have one that is called Arcoxia, In the UK it's got a similar name but slightly different. Pain down the front of your leg is a different nerve, the front of the thigh is femoral, etc.I have always been extremely active , live in Rio De Janeiro Brazil. Go to the beach, dance the Samba etc. I'm also British in my spare time. I woke up with a pain similar to yours, not very bad more than a year ago. I had a ticket to New York that gave me six weeks to get rid of my pain. So no exams were done and I went to a Chiroparctor , my GP., 27yrs of experience with my bod. (private) and a specialist in pain.Took Ibuprofen didn't do much, the Chiropactor showed me a couple of exercises which seemed to alleviate it a bit, but what made it MUCH better were the Mackenzie exercises which are on Youtube. I tavelled 5 months went to five different countries , carried heavy suitcases , BUT while visiting my cousin in Devon England had the most spectacular dramatic accident cracking a couple of ribs and I thought that was all, so I carried on travelling . Then carriend two heavy suitcases home with me. Unpacked & promptly became crippled.
1) The Sciatic Nerve is the largest nerve in the body, it DOESN'T run down the front of the leg. It runs down the BACK. BUT it passes throught the groin. You are taking the right meds. BUT you need to see an Orthopedist and X-Rays are no good, you need an MRI Scan , of the spine , eventually X-Rays only show Arthritis and only an Orthopedist could request the positions , I have had an MRI Scan, an Electoneuromiography , shows nerve damage, they stick long needles with electric impulses into the muscle to se how much , if any nerve damge has been done. You must see an specialist. Orthopedist, a GP is not much good at what exams to request and if, like me only a world renowned surgeon finally diagnosed exactly what I had and told me I had to take the medications to ameliorate th epain to be able to do physiotherapy and hopefully cure it so that he wouldn't have to operate, I've been in several accidents much adventure Ihave broken cokyx and arthrtis of the vertebra which were damaged by the accident in England and my very mad style of life. Gabapentin, Arcoxia , Celebrex and a Muscle relaxer ay night to sleep, even taking one that gives me eenrgy to support the pain called Venvanse, basically an Amphetamine, but legal. Specialist. You must see a specialist, good luck, they also prescribe codeine, doesn't work for nerve pain and is addictive. pain gets worse if you take it for long.(three weeks) GoI'm almost a Doctor now my GP. calls me Frau Doktor Google! Good luck . You'll get lots of replies here it helps one put up with the pain and distress of not being able to do what you normally do etc.
