Second hip replacement. 😳

Hi all.Â
I have t been on for a while now as I had my left THR just over a year ago. Now I have been told I will need my right hip replacing as well. I also have arthritis in my spine and sciatica that affects my left leg. I don’t know how I will cope with another hip replacement with the pain I have now.Â

Julie,
Sorry to hear you're having pain again, and need to have the other hip done. This seems to happen so often, I suspect that when we have a THR, we put so much strain on the other leg and hip joint, that it accelerates the wear on that leg.
At least you know what to expect, and you can be sure that you will have this forum behind you all the way.

Hi Julie! I totally understand! I had a right THR sept. 18 and now I have symptoms that lead me to believe I need my left hip done. I can't believe I need to go through that hell again. I keep thinking of Winston Churchill's saying: when you are going through hell, keep going! Hopefully we can all come out the other side better off! I have to admit, my new hip feels wonderful! All the best to you!

Julie, I'm 40 and work outside. I'm on week twelve thr right side posterior. I only found out I needed a hip, when my back Dr sent me for x Ray two years ago. The lower back L 4 L5 herniated disc pain sucks! The arthritis in same area is a tight constant crippling pain. I had back injected under x Ray a year ago, that took care of most sciatica pain, but not arthritis pain, and Dr told me that would be the case. The new hip has solved my knee collapsing during daily activities like coaching daughters softball team or working at my landscaping company, but last week when I had twelve week post op Dr visit. They almost pushed my pain issues off to the back Dr. So I'm not having fun recovering from thr, with extreme back pain. I might consider injecting back, but more important get to physical therapy for back asap. They can stretch you out and give you exercises that will help if you keep up with them. Funny thing with me, after thr surgery I slept on back for weeks. My back was feeling pretty good. Now that I roll from my side to stomach at night my back pain is crippling again. I hope this help s.

Chuck - reading your post I can relate to your pain, OUCHHHHH, been there done that I'm afraid, I have ruptured S1-L5, bulging L5-L4, and bulging L4-L3, not fun so you are only too well aware.
?Don't know if this will help you, but I worked this out myself, got in a heated pool deeper than I am tall, with a pool noodle under my arms, at first I was on such strong painkillers I was not even sure it was a good idea, but started very slowly just floating with my feet under me, stretching myself out with the noodle, and then very slowly started treading some water, some pain, but each and every time I got the pain, allowed myself to drop under the noodle and relax, and with a few weeks of treading water I started to notice the pain got less, was able to give up the morphine, and within a few more weeks started to realize that the pain was getting significantly less, have even given up Panadol, Just a note, I still have the feeling that my feet don't belong to me, feel cold all the time, but when Dr pinches my shins I jump, he said that good sign that the pinched nerves are not yet in serious trouble.
?I now work out at the pool, 2 - 3 times week, still treading water using the water noodle, I believe it is helping me, and physio has confirmed I am on the right track for no so much healing up completely, but holding steady and with little pain, with strong back muscles.

Once you have osteo arthritis I was told you have it in all your joints to varying degrees, and you like me, your hips have given it away first, would that be because they are the joints that are carrying most of your weight, that would seem to be the case, does that explain why our femur and hips and pelvis are the heaviest bones in our body.
For me my left knee has also given up the ghost, but not severe enough yet to warrant putting me on the waiting list for surgery so my GP tells me, but he was honest enough to tell me its only going to be a matter of time, laughing he said to me did I want the good news or the bad news.
?I knew what was coming, as my knee had been so sore, and the pain seemed so familiar, brother has just had a knee replacement last Xmas eve, kind of spoilt his Xmas, but told me he was very happy as a lot of his pain was gone, but all his friends and family came to him for Xmas, my family riddled with arthritis I'm afraid, so no real surprise.

It is such a shock when you hear you need the other hip replaced. The same happened to me and once it is done it is great. I did have back issues and hydrotherapy was the best thing I was advised to do. The physio at the pool showed me so many ways to help my back and once my 12sessions at hydrotherapy were over, I kept this up at a local heated pool.
All the best.Â
