seen my consultant today cystectomy and wants to remove ovaries too

I met the consultant today, he told me I should have a cystectomy to remove 2 cysts, he seemed keen to remove the ovaries too, however i queried this as I am 44 (not planning children) however I thought it was important to keep the ovaries due to the hormone production?  He said this could be replaced with pills /HRT.

He said he would leave ovaries if thats  what I wanted.  Also said there was a 2% risk of ovarian cancer if left   I asked him how I was suppoesed to make this decision when I know nothing / very little. he said he would post some info with his letter.

I'm not sure about this, what has anyone elses experience been?

I'm the same age as you. I had an extremely large cyst removed 3 weeks ago. When they first said that they would recommend a hysterectomy at the same time I wasn't impressed - despite having 2 kids and knowing I didn't want any more. All my scans and bloods had come back low risk I couldn't see the point. I then read a post from a lady who had had one op and then three weeks later test results on her removed cyst came back positive and she was now facing the prospect of a second round of surgery. That focused my mind and I went with the medical recommendation.

In a couple of weeks I am due to go to my GP to discuss the various hrt options to replace the oestrogen my body is now missing.

Hi Betty, can i ask why they recommended a hysterectomy to you please?  Was it purely because of ths cyst? Im in a similar situation with a few cysts and an elevated CA125 so just curious if thats the path they will suggest for me to follow. Im awaiting CT results smile

As my cyst was large (23cm x 19cm x 9cm) it wasn't going to be key hole surgery and although all indicators where showing nothing to worry about they wouldn't know for sure until the cyst was out and tested so they went for a general clear out of anything they considered to no- longer be required whilst they were in there, appendix too!

Hope they don't keep you waiting too long for your test results.

my problems all started with a susspected case of appendicitis, consultant didnt mention taking that out I might ask him to!

My test reults have all been low, however, I mentioned that my mother died from breast cancer and I think thats why he wanted to remove ovaries.  Its just that I could end up on hrt for years and many people say they put on weight with it and I cant afford to put on any more as i'm seriously overweight already.  So part of my concern is about the hrt

Thanks mags.  I was told that I had a thickened endometrium too but when I asked consultant about it he seemed unconcerned.

Good luck, will watch out for your update.
