Shoe advice for post operative bunion removal

Posted , 9 users are following.

hi. I am seven weeks post op after bunion operation and struggling to find anything to wear on my foot.  I am currently wearing my husbands size 9 croc on my post op foot and my trainer on the other.  Not much movement in my big toe yet and scar still not heeled so along with swelling I can't get a normal trainer on my foot.  Wondering how long this will last and when I can get back into a matching pair or whether I should invest in a larger pair of trainers for the recovery period. Any advice?

    Hi Sue

Yes my big toe is still less mobile but the surgeon said that would be the case as he cut a wedge out of it to get it straight! I have been wearing normal boots and some of my shoes for a while now but there are still some I cannot manage due to the swelling that's still there. Also, the surgeon prescribed some orthotics to try to help with walking properly and I can't always get them in my boot under the swelling either. A lot of bad backs are as a result of low arches and the way we walk but Doctors don't often recognise it.

However, even though my birthday said I was 63 this week, my head tells me I am still 35 and 'Hotter' shoes, whilst no doubt comfortable do not go well with my skinny jeans and that's my incentive! Keep flexing the foot and elevate in the evening whilst wearing the wine cooler around your foot.

Ahh thanks for the advice.  I was trying to wear my skinny jeans but looked daft with husbands huge croc on my foot and a large walking sock! Now back in tracksuit bottoms which has been all I have worn this year! I have a staple at the base of my toe and can wiggle the top a bit but can't bend it enough to get in a shoe that is my size.  Think I may buy a bigger pair of trainers for the new few weeks wear.  I suffer with sciatica and used to wear orthotics for better posture and dodgy knees. I now feel very lobb sided and struggling with a hip problem so hoping my physio for that may be able to give me some sneaky bunion advice too!

Age is a state of mind..you go girl! 😄

    Hi there

haven't been on this site for awhile, but had my second foot done (Chevron osteotomy) on 20/2/15 so am immobile again!  Saw your post re. shoes...  funny how so many of us have to have the surgery so we can find a pair to fit (that doesn't cause even more pain) and here we are again, looking for shoes that fit our chubby feet during recovery ;-)

It just occurred to me that maybe the mary jane-type of canvas sneakers (trainers) from a sporting store might work for us as they just cover the toes and have a strap to keep them on.  Maybe somewhere like LL Bean might sell them, but I'm not sure if they ship to the UK (I'm Canadian).

    Happy online shoe shopping!

Thanks for the response. My husband suggested there was a gap in the market to be exploited! I am annoyed as I know I had just the boot about 13 years ago when I was pregnant with my second child and only got rid of them about a year ago.  They were reasonably trendy but flat and a Velcro top that came all the way off to allow foot access.  Can't be that hard to make something temporary that we could use while we get mobile again.  Some of the special shoes are very expensive and I don't feel they would be an investment as I don't really want to be wearing them!,  Skechers are a bit like what you are describing... Think I may go and see if I can get any of them on!

Hi, im 4 weeks post op and just had pin removed and now allowed to weight bear. i had already bought a pair of leather ballet pumps from next in a larger size and these are great for round the house. Then i found a pair of leather mules, a bit like crocs but not so clumpy on viva la diva shoe site.they have a padded insole and are like walking on clouds! They also have a back strap which can be worn or pushed forward.

I also bought a pair of long suede extra wide flat boots from simply be. They are also perfect for me, and although i have to wear a thicker sock on my good foot i guess i will get my moneys worth on all of these as i'm having the other foot done later in the year. I don't like trainers or crocs and also wouldnt wear them to work, but these i can.

    Good luck with your recovery.

    Kind regards Sue
