Should I be this paranoid about my ringworm? Tinea Manuum

Posted , 3 users are following.

I've been fighting ringworm for the past month or so starting with one on my neck. That seems to be gone now, but I saw something on my finger and went to the dermatologist to get it diagnosed. He said it was fungus (Tinea Manuum) and to talk Terbinafine oral tablets for a month. I am also using Tinactin cream on it. I'm on day 10 now, and, while my finger isn't as "bubbly" looking, the skin is still broken. On top of that, I *think* I see some spots around my mouth and am worried I spread the ringworm somehow. Also, I don't feel it's possible to disinfect everything that I have touched with my hand, especially my phone, keyboard, guitar, piano, pens, and books. I haven't spent time with my cats in 10 days because I am afraid of giving them ringworm, or making them carriers of my spores to distribute back to me.

Am I super worried for nothing, or will I wake up the next day with Tinea Capitis? How do you go about disinfecting things? Do the Terbinafine tablets kill newly formed fungus, or is that something I will need to treat additionally?

Any advice or reassurance would be great.

I had yeast fungus on my skin and it always came back after I used antifungal cream. It was a small area so one day I took a cue tip and straight bleach and applied it to the yeast for 10 minutes. It never came back.

Hi shawnp720, I completely understand you being worried about ringworm. I contracted it some years back after sitting on a gym bench wearing shorts. I managed to get rid of the infection using Terbinafine cream for several weeks. For a while, I also felt paranoid every time my upper thigh was itchy or after spotting a red mark or a small pimple.  I would have Lamisil cream on standby and apply it as a preventative measure.

I think it is very important to identify the (probable) source of your infection and to try to avoid it. In my case, I started wearing long sports trousers to the gym and never had a problem since.

You could have your cats checked by a vet. Ringworm is infectious before any obvious symptoms (like the red circular rash) and you could have passed the infection to your cats. Moreover, in pets, the telltale circular rash might not be present. If your pets are outdoor cats they might have imported the infection to your house. You could ask your vet about pet safe anti-fungal cleaners.

Regarding disinfecting things you can rub more resistant items with alcohol or even sanitising hand gel. For other items, you could get a disinfectant spray or liquid. I would recommend washing towels and bed linen on a high temperature and applying laundry disinfectant to the last rinse cycle (instead of fabric conditioner).
