Skin damage, atrophy reversal

Hi Friends,

I had dry scaly skin on the head of my circumsized penis. Came up negative for any STI. A dermatologist prescribed ketokonazole 2% and hydrocortisone valerate 0.2%, with instructions to apply both 2x a day for 5days to 2 weeks. Well i wasnt feeling right after the 3rd day and stopped. Immediately after, my erections were painful, and i am able to see vessels i couldnt see before. An erection felt so tight and painful as if my skin was going to crack. Ive since been advised from a different dermatologist to use Aquafor at night, and cetaphil excema restoraderm. It is helping with the tightness and pain, but the translucence is still there. Is there anyway to rebuild the skin I've lost? I'm very wary about what i apply down there even with a Drs recommendation. I've read that topical tretinoin and topical retinoids can be used to help reverse atrophy. Is there any truth to that? Do i have any other options? Thank you kindly. Have a great day.
