Is it weird to be excited about getting a new hip??? Had my last appt before surgery last Friday. All is good. Got some last minute questions out of the way and am looking forward to my new hip. I think regardless of what pain I may have after surgery, it cannot be any worse than I feel now. This is unbearable. One more day with this defective hip and a brand new one on Tuesday!!! WooHoo! 😁

Good evening Susan9069! I know exactly how you feel. I had my 1st THR on May 15th of 2017. I thought I could wait until next year but the pain became so excruciating I decided I couldn't wait. So.I had my 2nd THR on August 28th. The best decision yet! Yes the recovery is difficult but nothing like the pain of bone on bone walking. So you have every right to be excited. The quality of your life is about to improve greatly! This forum has been another one of the best parts of the whole process.Everyone is full of information and encourage ment. Much success! Teresa

Yes be excited! We all lived with the pain so long and to wake up and have a bunch of it gone is wonderful. sure there is the surgery pain, and getting the weakness from cut muscles back on track, but man, that's way better than a knee buckling every time I walked from my house to my shop. Or a huge popping of hip joint as I got under machines to work on them. Or feeling like I tore my groin muscle for the last 10 years.
My story is this, I am 40 and fit. they told me to walk a bunch when I left hospital, I started pt day 7 doing big exercises, and I walked a bunch! I felt great, but then had some bleeding inside my leg. Lots of swelling, so make sure you don't be a super hero that first couple weeks. lie down a bunch with leg elevated, and take it easy, give those veins time to heal! I went off pain meds 5 days before surgery because they thin blood. My PT guy said I should have stopped them a month before because I was on so much.
Also Ice was my best friend! Better than pain meds! At hospital, if they give you a crappy throw away cloth back with ice chips that's not cold. Send them back and tell them to get something cold! They then brought me these really nice blue gell ones. They rotated about 6 for me out of freezer, my nurse then told me they are a one patient use only, so I got to take them all home
I am starting week 5 right now.
Good luck Hippie! see you on the other side!

I went into surgery wearing my Norspan (morphine) pain patches, they peeled them off as they were preparing me for surgery on the operating table, you are not going to need those now was the comment.
I had to come off my fish oil capsules a week before surgery as I was told they would make my blood extra thin.
All I can think is you were on a different medication to me, one that did make your blood thin.

Hi Susan, it's absolutely right to be excited - your new life awaits! I have a few more days to wait, but to be honest it can't come quick enough for me now as pain is so bad! Like you, I realise it won't be a walk in the park (hopefully a walk up the road for me!) but I can't go on as I am so bad hip has to go. Good luck, stay safe and don't go too mad too soon!

Oh Susan. You sound just like I was. I couldn't wait to get there. The excitement by far exceeded any nerves. I live near hospital and every time I passed I would say "in xxx days I'll be going in. Packing my bag for admission was on a par with holiday packing in excitement.
I stayed positive and upbeat throughout.
I am nearly 8 weeks 'on the other side' and so grateful to be rid of that excruciating pain. I have my life back.
Keep smiling 😆Sandra x

I had my RTHR on Friday 8th September so 10 days post op now. I too was very excited to go, felt very positive and was ready for it. I really had no nerves whatsoever, it had taken me a long time to accept it mentally but once I was there I knew it was time to get on with it.
My journey post op had been bumpy, struggled with low BP and nausea due to strong pain relief but dropping them and getting home last Thursday has made a big difference. Taking each day as it comes
Good luck, look forward to hearing from you on 'the other side' pain free .

N o w twelve weeks on am just getting ready to go to aqua class and next it will be circuit training. The relief from that awful grinding pain. Don't even care that I have a scar that looks like a shark bite. Good luck do your exercises x

Hi Susan, good luck tomorrow, waking up and not being in that pain is fantastic. The pain from the op varies for me it was grim as the epidural wasn't done properly so only numbed the other side. I had a general as well. I remember waking up in recovery and mysurgeon said It's all gone really well. My response was thank God that bloody pain has gone. 2years on today it's fantastic. Danced for 3 hours on Saturday night at a party and people couldn't believe I was a hippie lol.

Very best of luck to you Susan9069!
I am 6 weeks post bilateral THR's and feel great! It is well worth it! Yes, it will be sore for few days, but you will feel better each day and the pain will become a distant memory before too long.
I can now walk my dog, drive, go most of day without pain relief - main issue is not overdoing it as feel so well. Tiredness too, but that improves each day too.
Your op is the 1st day of recovery to begin to enjoy the rest of your life.
Again, wishing you the very best of luck. 😊😊

Hi Jilly,
I am glad to hear you have had a successful bilatteral THR.
I am new to the blog but haven't seen too many posts regarding bilateral. I'm going in on 9/29 for mine and can't wait! I have struggled with the diagnosis but I am very grateful to be able to have a new surgery called "Superior!Direct" this is a minimally invasive anterior surgery , no muscle cutting different than the traditional approach have you heard of this ?
I'm 53, and have five boys and wasn't prepared to take this much time at this stage of my life to recover!
But I can't bear the pain any longer and grateful to be able to have the surgery available to me .
Can you shed any light on your recovery process ?

Hi Karina - well done for making the decision to go ahead. I think we get to a point where we have no choice as pain and reduced mobility limits us too much.
I didn't have the new approach so don't know how long your rehab will take - have you asked your surgeon?
I was able to do a flight of stairs before i came home and could get in and out of bed.
I live with my teenage daughter who wasn't much help, so was lucky to have a very practical friend stay with me for a few days until i could get about more easily. Frozen ready meals were a big help. I accepted all help offered and set up a messenger group to include all who had offered help. I was on 2 crutches for about 2 - 3 weeks. The 3rd week i mixed using 1 stick and 2 crutches - i could walk short distances with 1 stick, but longer distances and quality of walking, used crutches. I was driving as soon as i could do an emergency stop - about 2 1/2 weeks.
I'm now nearly 7 weeks and hope to return to work in another couple of weeks doing mornings on admin work for couple weeks. Main issue now is fatigue so half days for little while should work well. Went for my 1st swim yesterday - felt great!! Everyday i feel things get a little better and i hardly take any pain relief now. We are all different in our recoveries tho.
Feel free to ask any more questions we may have. You could set up your own discussion too - there are lots of people out here who have had bilaterals and can offer good advice - perhaps some who have had the approach you are having. Best of luck! 😊😊

Not weird at all. The prospect of a new hip and no pain is great.
Good luck tomorrow
