Hi all, I have started running again after gaining 2 stone in the last 3 yrs. ? I have done 2 runs so far, a nice little route 3.5 miles. My hip hurts a bit for the first mile, then the pain goes away. I really did love my running before my THR and hope to start to enjoy it again. 😀 I know running is frowned upon but my theory is if I lose this 2 stone It will be less weight on it so it would counter balance it out. Plus I will feel a lot better about myself. 😁 Any post op runners out there? What are peoples thoughts on this? 🤔

I haven't had the op yet because I am afraid I won't be able to run again. I run 5km now couple times a week to stay in shape. Curious if you can continue to run. Post over time. I would like know how you do.
What is 2 Stone??

Hi Teresa, 2 stone is 28lb. 😏 I will keep you posted how I get on. I think the important thing for me is not to do too much too soon. Famous last words 😆

Dear Michael
I'm flat that you are feeling so positive but although being lighter now is bound to help I think you need to be aware that the impact to your prosthesis puts the stem in danger of loosening particularly as your replacement surgery is still very recent in the big scheme of things.
Although I could run perfectly well following my original hip replacement I only did so in emergency situations and the longest distance would have been five hundred yards or so. I had no concerns with any heavy duty activity such as very heavy lifting and carrying, climbing ladders and doing building work and my hip lasted twenty years before I wore right through the poly cup.
Take care! Cheers Richard

The one thing my consultant told me was not to run, I am 4 months post op and can cycle 30+ miles no problem. So would you not consider something like that, I used to run marathons but find cycling more enjoyable and much kinder to your joints.

Hi. I was told to not do 2 things after my hip replacement. Run and jump out of buildings. 😂. These 2 things are a big no no as they wear out yr joint too quickly. What about power walking? The one that they do races with. (Heel first, wiggling hips, very fast) then cycling, swimming, elyptical walker etc. I know you runners love it and can't help yourselves sometimes and I admire your enthusiasm but yr joint needs good care to last as long as possible.
Tricky. Good luck.

Jarring the new hip is potentially going to loosen the stem and if that happens it is a major issue. Far better to avoid that danger and resist any activity that jars the hip. I gave up hang closing because it usually requires a short run for the take off and the landing. I had twenty years from my new hip doing a lot of heavy demanding work and the revision was,a great success as the stem was still secure and only the poly cup and metal cage needed replacing.
Cheers, Richard

I really enjoy running, but taking onboard what everyone has been saying I think I will have to hang my running shoes up (again) 😄
I agree that it's too risky, it's just so bloody hard to stop doing something you love.
I will have to stick to cycling which I really love too, and swimming.
Thank you all. 👍😁

Dear Michael
If I may say so I think you have made an extremely wise decision. One's mobility IS FREEDOM best to remember that when you have the urge to run or do any other impact activity that can impact on a joint replacement. I hated giving up hang closing but there it is.
Cheers Richard
