has anyone out there had the stiff knee after the surgery. I’m 9 weeks out and therapy doesn’t seem to help. My bed is excellent so not sure what is going to happen now.

I have been having really bad pain in the morning with stiffness. Once I am up it eases . I am 8 weeks post op. I think it is the swelling ( not sure though)

Hi Joanne, I am 9 weeks and I’m exactly the same, I still get up in the night to bend and stretch my knee.  As soon as I get up in the morning I do some exercises so that I start the day off well, then ice and elevate while I’m eating breakfast!  If I’m on my feet too long I get the tight band feel around the knee, very uncomfortable. I have to ice and rest then too. I’ve heard this feeling will be with us for a while yet! 😪

I'm also 9 weeks and also knee still very stiff can't always lift leg and bending is painful physio on the day is good and I come away feeling good but towards the end of the week I feel down. I don't think this cold weather is helping I feel down most if the time when will it stop feeling stiff

I am hurt coming up to 9 weeks .

I am feeling just like you. I am not having physio which I don't think is helping, I was discharged from my consultant and physiotherapist at 6 weeks, I have no one checking my knee. To be honest I am feeling very tearful and down

I was signed off by consultant at 7 weeks and my last physiotherapist under NHS was about the same time.  I am now seeing same physio but paying privately but wanted the reassurance and ‘push’ from her for the time being.  There’s nothing to stop you from seeing someone privately if you think you need extra help and reassurance. Good luck with the rest of your recovery.

Rest and have a cry if you need to.

I think around 9, 10, weeks is a hard time....the reality of how long it takes hits you.

      Being overtired makes it worse.

Try and find things which make you happy to do but which also give you physical rest.

It does get a lot better.

Thank you I think that is what is happening, I now realise it is going to be longer than I expected. It will be worth it in the end

From memory I think most of my knee stiffness was gone by 6 months, but it varies from person to person.

I was reading several of your posts about stiff knees and also about feeling “down”.  I totally can sympathize with you about the depressed down feelings.  I am 7 wks from tkr and started feeling down 4 weeks out.  I found out mine was mostly due to cutting back from the pain meds.  I was on hydrocodone.  I started cutting back 1 pill every 3 days and began falling into a depressed state. I was told by a psychiatrist that it was opioid withdrawal symptoms, so i had to reduce very slowly.  Ive been off of the opioids completely now for 8 days and they are still getting out of my system.  I just take Aleve now and rub Aspercreme on my leg for pain.  Another thing I find that works well for stiffness is HEAT, which my surgeon recommends.

We have to remember this is a marathon.  My biggest problem is thinking i would be back to normal in a few weeks after surgery.  This is big time surgery and very invasive.  Our bodies have been through a lot of trauma and it takes a lot of time to recover from this.  We have to be kind to ourselves and rest, rest, rest.  Try Aspercreme...its good.

      Hi

I am 16 weeks out from rtkr. I too was on Vicodin and was very down. I finally stopped taking it but I still need something so Doc gave me oxycodone which I try to take only one at night. Today was a stiff and painful day for me. I took 2 Advil and it seemed to help. I also but as per team with Lidocane and that seems ok. However here I sit again tonight in pain, reading all the posts, thank God for them. I can’t sleep, don’t want to take anything more so I’ll just wait till I am exhausted and go to bed. Good luck to you.😊

I am just starting at 13 weeks tkr on right knee. Like everyone else here My main stiffness is in the mornings when I wake up. The goes away during the day.

I also get stiff if I sit too long.

With me also if I stand to long I get that little tight band around my knee. My doctor said it will take a year to 18 months to heal

Yes it will take longer than you may want sorry
