Hello fellow gallbladder sufferers. Well my husband went in on Friday to have op,only to find that the surgeon was unable to perform keyhole and made a massive 5 to 6 inch cut so that he could get through to get the gallbladder out. The op took 3 and half hours and he had to have 2 small and 2 large intsestines seperated due to adhesions. He is still on epidural due to pain and they tried to remove it yesterday Sunday, so they could give him Tramadol and Paracetamol, but the pain was so bad they had to put him back on epidural again. I am beginning to panic a bit as he has not passed any gas or had a bowel movement and it's Monday. He suffered a intestinal blckage 5 years back, so worried a bit that he may get another. He is eating a bit but he says he feels full quicker. He is also walking around to try and get some movement going and he is also taking laxatiives. He said to me the other night if he knew it was going to be like this he wouldn't have had the op. But don't worry all those reading this as this is a bit different to normal keyhole and it won't be like this for you. I just want to know if anyone else has had something similar or if you can tell me when you start to go to the loo having had your intestines fiddled about with. I am so pleased to be able to talk to people on this forum as it helps me loads to cope with whats going on.

Hi Belinda
You say husband just had op on Friday. He would have been nil by mouth from early Friday morning until at least Saturday. Then the effects of anaesthetic, pain and of the surgery itself will have affected his appetite and his mood, so I suspect he's had very little to eat since? Basically, nothing in, nothing out!!! As his appetite increases and he eats more, I'm sure this situation will resolve itself.
It's normal to feel a bit low after a general anaesthetic and a long surgery. It must be hard for you - my husband just been in hospital for a week with infected bursitis and had to have surgery. In my case, I was just relieved to be rid of the pain which sometimes lasted three or four days at a time. In a few days, once his appetite returns and he has a bowel movement I'm sure he'll feel better.
I had my surgery on a Saturday and I'm sure it was four or five days before I had a bowel movement despite taking laxitives. I was told the bowel doesn't like being messed about with. I'm now eleven weeks post op following a liver resection and sixteen weeks from my open cholecystectomy and apart from some tenderness where my gallbladder was and a feeling of fullness, I am doing ok. I am 67, so no spring chicken but I feel better than I have for years though I get tired easily still but I did have two major surgeries within five weeks.
Your husband is still in hospital where I'm sure they are keeping an eye on the situation with his bowels. He needs to emphasise his concerns to the ward sisters and doctors.
Remember, a malfunctioning gallbladder is no good to anyone. In the end, despite low fat diets, flushes, bile salts, enzymes and all the other stuff people try, surgery is inevitable. Delaying it puts you at risk of peritonitis, sepsis, jaundice and it may affect the liver and pancreas. I felt I had no choice. I was exhausted by pain and lack of sleep. As things turned out, having the surgery has probably saved my life.
Try to stay positive. Hope all goes well.
