Hello all,

So I am still waiting on the blood results from the doctor. I am not doing too great mentally and now I am scared to call for them. It has been 8 days.

How did it go? Did you call?

Waiting on the doctor to call me back. Feel ill. Everyone is right though, not knowing is worse. However, the blood test will only tell me if it is HSV2 as I have HSV1 on my lip for about the last 15 years.

      Whole thing has me ill.

Was reading a comment you made earlier, I feel exactly the same, every itch down there and I am freaking out! People have normal itches too! I have to remember that.

Waiting is immensely stressful, plus the moment you get that call or email, etc. My diagnosis was emailed to me in the morning (email is my preference, as I like to have the lab report), and I remember waking up, seeing the email notification on my phone, and taking a big gulp and just opening the damned email, lol. That was scary, and I did not get the result I was hoping for(!!), but at least I had a diagnosis, so could take the next step forwards.

Yeah, I get occasional spots on my butt, because my sofa cover is not cotton and makes me sweat if I sit on it for too long (time to get a new cover, methinks!), so now I don't know what's what! I'm trying not to think that everything is GH, but it certainly makes you more paranoid and aware of every little thing/change down below!!

I love email too. It isn't an option at my doctors or I would have asked by email. Gives you time and space to process.

      Feel horrendous sad

So, I just got the call. I am positive for HSV1, which I knew, and negative for HSV2.

LOADS of questions now, if this was HSV2 I would have had to contract it some 8 years ago. I have been in a monagamous relationship for all of this time. When do you start making antibodies? From infection or from 1st outbreak?

What test did they do? IgG blood test only or a lesion swab as well? HSV-1/2 antibodies aren't reliably detectable till a few weeks post-infection. After 1-2 months there may be some, but definitely by 3-4 months onwards.

They did a swab within 24 hours of the blisters coming up and that came back negative for both HSV1 and HSV2. They then did the blood test a week later and it came back negative for hsv2. I have suffered from hsv1 on my lip for most of my life.

The thing I am wondering, if I was infected it would have had to be over 8 years ago. Would I have no antibodies if I was infected that long ago? If it is HSV1 then I won't know either way unless I have another outbreak.

      Confused cry

Other scenarios besides what you noted above: Your genital outbreak was due to HSV-1 (it's not impossible to get HSV-1 in both locations - did they do a swab test?); your partner has genital HSV-2 and you only acquired it now (it's possible to avoid infection for years - has your partner been tested?), or you acquired it from him previously but missed the first outbreak (did your groin lymph nodes swell and feel tender this time?); this is not GH.

My bad! Yes, you should have antibodies if you acquired HSV-2 eight years ago, so that scenario is unlikely. So, either not GH, or genital HSV-1, or genital HSV-2 recently from your partner (not missed from ages ago, as you should still have antibodies as above - not thinking straight before!).

Next time you have an outbreak, if you have another one, ask for a DNA/PCR lesion swab. Much more accurate.

Must be confusing, that's for sure! Another thing you can do is to wait 3-4 months from your outbreak and redo the IgG test again. If you don't mind the extra cost and can't stand to wait that long, you can re-test at two months to see if anything is detectable by then. Possible, but not guaranteed.
