such bad pain

I've had my pre-assessment - finally!  the blood test needs re doing as it showed I was anaemic.

However this evening i just can't cope with the pain. It's now centred in my foot as well as leg & groin. I've had to give in and put morhine patches back on - I vowed I never would after having the nurse come in to give me an enema!!! All due to morphine. The enema wasn't too bad but my goodness the amount of blood I lost. (piles).

I don't know how to get on top of this pain. It's new, never had it on foot and all leg. It's very sharp. A week or so ago I started getting a bone clicking noise and now it's all the time whenever I try to walk. Maybe I have AVN. I don't know. But this pain is frightening and I don't know how to get on top of it. Any ideas please? By the way my surgeon showed me my Xray taken in June and it showed bone on bone

Hi, Sarah, don't know that I can offer any suggestions about your pain, but I will tell you what I do when using ANY narcotic medication, or any others that cause constipation. I take an OTC stool softener capsule with every single dose of the drug. If using patches that stay on for 12 hours, I take 2 capsules at night and one in the morning. The brand name is Colace, but store brands of the same product are usually cheaper and work just as well. As long as I match one for one, I usually do oksy - at least less constipated and easier to pass stools.

    Dear Sarah.

My apologies but I've forgotten when your surgery is arranged for but if I was suffering as you obviously are then I would try long hot baths.

At least that should help to relax your muscles and that may keep you going.

    Best wishes, Richard

Oh Sarah that is awful for you all I can add is drink plenty of water as this helps everything move around the bowel. Also for me a banana works. They gave me anemone in hospital but I didn't really go. As soon as I was home had a banana and within the hour I had gone but I was scared as well as you r not allowed to strain so just sat there for a while till nature took its course. Hopefully your anemia will be ok and you will get a date soon xx

      Hi Amanda,

Just had another blood test so fingers crossed I wont be anaemic this time and can have my op with this newbie surgeon soon. Everything else to do with my pre assessment seems ok. I asked the surgeon how many ops he'd done, (apparently 160)  and he trained at Stanmore. He was very nice, just hope his surgery is! This is just about the limit of my pain now. I can't imagine being able to walk with my rollator much longer. When I walk you can actually hear the thigh bone (?) cracking. At pre-assessment I was shown my Xray from June and it was bone on bone. No space left at all.

PS, no help when i get home after op but I'm quite used to being independent so that doesn't worry me one bit. I can catch up on all my recorded TV programmes smile

Hi Sarah, if you're having posterior you might need a bit of help initially because of the 90° rule. Wishing you all the best with your op.

Hi Sarah, how long have you got to wait? It must be soon f you have had pre - assessment?  In the last month or so my pain really cranked up, and I had pain through the whole leg, in the knee, down the outside of the calf and across my foot as far as the toes. It made me feel nauseous, and I couldn't believe it was 'just' from my hip. I was very worried those pains would continue post -op even though assured it would all go. Happily I have only got pain post procedure now, which I know will go, so you can look forward to yours going for good! Obviously, constipation is a real pain for you, but your pain relief is the most important thing to have right. What about good old fashioned prunes / figs / bran and dates alongside any constipation meds you can take?

    dear Sarah,

    Poor darling  ....

You received some great tips here and hopefully it will work ...

Do the morphine patches work ? Catch 22, isn't it ...

When is your next blood test?   I wish I could help you more - try to relax your body a bit --- I know this is not easy, but do try .... take a deep breath and on the out breath take your breath to your pain -

when your body is stressed, pain gets worse ... just try it - and, if you can, listen to healing meditation - you tube has many ,,,

sending you light, love and healing

    big warm hug

    renee

Thanks Mike, I seem to be ok now on the bathroom visits, taking Laxicol and senna but no more oral morphine.  I can't do without my patches but that's it. Scared me to death seeing all that blood. My goodness.
